Contact list input/display

Why do I have to put a comma behind the last name in order to have all contacts displayed in alphabetical order? For example: Widget Company shows up under C for Company Widget. The only remedy I found is to put a comma behind Widget. Then it shows up under W as "Widget, Company".
Tried the sort function as well as settings Last name first or first name last to no avail.
Any ideas to resolve this?

Welcome to the forum. Knowing what phone and contact app you're using would be helpful. My contacts sort fine using last name first, don't know why that isn't working for you. Try giving us more information.

M & J - I only enter company names into the last name field - then it will sort correctly. Rich

you usually have a choice of a name field, a last name field and a first name field (pull down the arrow to the right of the name field), and a nickname field (in something like "additional fields"). If you try them all and see which one lists things the way you want them.
