Contact Notification ring tones

Hello, I've been having trouble with the ring tones assigned to certain contacts. It started with the Note 4 and now with the Note 5. I use to be able to assign ring tones to certain contacts, so I can know who is calling me or texting without having to look at my phone right away. It was working fine with my Note 4 and all of a sudden the assigned ring tones weren't working. With my Note 5, the assigned ring tones will only work when it's a phone call but not with text messages. I've I use ring tones that come pre-installed with the phone. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I've always done it just like adding a ringtone to a specific person. Pull up the contact, edit, add field, scroll to ring tone or message tone. AT&T, 5.1.1 Lollipop.

I hadn't even noticed that my assigned text sounds aren't working! Calls work as assigned but messages are all the standard notification sound even though I have a handful with different sounds. I would guess the Marshmallow update but your Note 4 did this too. Did it have MM?

My custom ring and message tones work on my (Verizon) Note 5 with 6.0.1 (BPF2). It could be you have a bad setting somewhere that got carried over. A factory reset usually fixes these sort of things.
