contact numbers showing up instead of names in google message app

I have been having this issue for a while now and whatever i do, it seems i can't fix it.

some people that have been in my contacts for years and some are recent are not showing the names in the message app, it only show phone numbers. I see their name in the contacts app though.

I have tried searching in google for a fix, only saw one thread on a forum that has the same issue on a pixel 2 but they didn't mention a fix.

Does anyone know of a fix?

I have a pixel 4XL.

Yes...
Go to the play store and uninstall the messages app. It won't actually uninstall it but uninstall updates.

By then it should be fixed.

Update the app again, it should still be working normally.

Edit: you also won't lose any messages (from my experience)
