So I recently decided to back up all my contacts with Gmail. The problem I have noticed is that when I add a new phone number, it default saves it to my phone. I have to go thru a drop down menu to pick an option where it saves to my Gmail.

The question is, is there any way to make it default save to my gmail rather than phone.

The phone periodically syncs with gmail so it will make it to your gmail contacts and vice versa, if you update something in your gmail contacts, it will make it to your phone as well.

You can go into Menu-Settings-Accounts and Sync-Google and hit sync now if you want it done immediately. Make sure Contacts is checked.

Just checked through the settings and I could not find anything to change it. Is the contacts sync to your primary Google account.

Yeah, all my contacts are in my primary gmail account. Just to make sure i created a new contacted and saved to phone. Then I went into accounts and sync and forced sync contacts. I went onto my Gmail and the new contact did not show.

That's odd when I create a new contact it sync right up. But when I set up my phone I pulled all my contacts in from Google and its worked fine

Yeah I factory reset my phone after i imported all my contacts into Gmail and set up my phone using my primary Google Account and all the contacts on my phone as of now are from Gmail. Its just that new contacts dont seem to sync with gmail.

Oh well, thanks for all the responses

Hmmm, that is weird. I tried adding a test contact as well and its not showing up in my gmail contacts. It must only update contacts that originate from Google. My test contact in the upper right corner says phone, the rest all say Google. That is kind of dumb if it doesnt sync contacts you manually add on your phone.

When you add it you have to manually pull down the edit screen to reveal the "where to store it" choices. You have to select one that syncs to Google if that's what you want. A "Phone" contact does not sync to Google. "Phone" is the default and can't be changed.

Frank is a genious! I didnt see that field where you can choose what type of contact it was. Just re-added my test contact as a Google contact and it saved instantly to my gmail account!

Frank, I always appreciate reading your helpful inputs, and have been trying to follow you guys on this thread. Now the drop down menu you speak about, is that on phone (couldn't find) or on pc when in gmail contact list (I'm away from pc now)?

It is on the phone, you have to scroll up on the add contact screen.

I was just hoping if someone know how to make it save to gmail as default, but i guess you cant

Its on the phone, when you add a new contact its at the top right under name, it will say "Contact Type", it defaults to phone but you can change it Google or SIM.

^^^^ OK, thanks guys! thanks to your replies I found that drop down menu.

but now,
how do I take existing contacts (which were added to the phone and don't show up in gmail on pc) and get to that drop down menu to get them off of "phone " and get them to sync with my gmail account.

basically, here's my situation.. used to have a blackberry storm with Google sync and any new contact I added via phone showed up on my pc when using gmail to email ppl.
now, I'd like it to be the same way. I understand now that when I add a new contact I can select it to sync with any of the gmail accounts on my phone, BUT, how do I achieve this to a contact who's been added thru phone and hasn't had any designation except for "phone" as default?
I can't seem to pull up that drop down menu when I go back to edit contacts. it's as if that drop down menu only exists for initial setup of contact.

thanks.

In the People app, hit "Menu, Import/Export" and export the "Phone" contacts to SD card, then import them back to your Google account. You may end up with duplicates, but I think you can use the "View" option (under Menu again) to see only one or the other. Or you can delete those from the "Phone" as needed.

Personally, I don't want mine synched to Google, just my e-mail, so I have them under phone only and export them to SD card where I then copy the file off to my network attached storage as a backup.

What I did to change Phone contacts to Google contacts was to export the Phone contacts to the SD card. Then delete the Phone contacts. After this, you can import the contacts you exported, which should ask you where to import to. Choose Google and they are now Google contacts.

Edit: I see Synycalwon beat me to it.
