Anyone find an option to sort contacts by last name. I've been all up and down this phone and can't find such a setting.

I just did this. Went into phone >contacts >Menu>scroll down to settings then choose sort by last name and list by last name. Worked for me.

Go into Contacts, hit the menu button and choose settings. Then you should see the option to change the sort.

Scroll! Ah ha! I hit menu, didn't see it on the list, but didn't try to scroll down the list.
Duh.

Just tried the sort idea to get last name first. Unfortunately my old phone was set to do last name first when it was transferred to my new GS3. Now my new entries are First name last. Trying to change to Last name first jumbles the original names. Any idea, other than redoing the entire list?

Try sorting by first name last and moving the first last name to the first on the list. Then transpose first and last names, sort by first name first, then once again by first name last/last name first.

This is genius. The menu list within "Contacts" is just one line too long to reveal the "Settings" function. You have to scroll up one line to see "Settings". Then... you can set the way the Contacts list is displayed. What user friendly smart *** designed this one?

EDIT: Please ignore this post. I am new to Android and did not realize I was posting under the wrong subforum (I have a I9305 instead of a Verizon). So I moved my question to the correct forum but I don't know how to delete this post. Sorry.

Samsung have installed different versions of their firmware (ROM), depending upon which country the phone came from. I have 2 S4s one from Hong Kong and one from Australia. My Hong Kong phone the option to do this is not present in the settings menu, it is however, present in my wife's Australian phone.....go figure.

The Australian S4 has its dock icons locked and you cannot move apps around on the screen without selecting edit first. The Hong Kong phone you can. Please Samsung fix this stuff, there is no logical reason why some features should be disabled in some countries. This is an area IOS still reign supreme.

I have somewhat a different problem, but related. Got a new Galaxy S3. Somehow, it was loaded with an old contact list of mine... where it came from, I don't know. Anyway, I list contacts by first name. In my mysteriously loaded contact list, I have doctor names, and they show up under the D's as Dr Smith, Dr Jones, etc. All are under the D's. But when I put in a new doctor name, as Dr Jackson, it appears under the J's. Apparently Android sees "Dr" as a title, and ignores it as a first name, so it uses the next name (Jackson) as the name, and puts it under the J's. I want Android to not be so smart, and let me put Dr Jackson under the D's.
I tried to resort by last name, then again by first name, and pre-existing Dr Smith, et. al. still remain under the D's, while new entries such as Dr Jackson, Dr Strangelove will still be listed under J's for Jackson and S's for Strangelove. The only way I can get around this is to change Dr to Doc in front of Jackson, and it will list under the D's. Hate this. Any ideas out there? (I would have started a new thread, but don't see how to do it.)

I do the same thing with Dr's
I put the Dr in the first name field, this has worked for me you might try it.

First name: Dr Bill
Last name: Smith

Shows up on the list as Dr Bill Smith
Along with all the D's

Even if I leave off the first name and just put Dr, it shows up in the D's
Dr Smith

Hey, Michael, thanks. That works for me. I was just putting the name "Dr Strangelove" in the name field that pops up; I had not expanded that to see that there were fields to break that down into First name, Middle and Last Name. Thanks a bunch!
