I just got a N8 and I am loving it.
With Samsung phones I've owned in the past, I've always just installed the Google Contacts and Calendar apps and never used the native Samsung apps. Since I am all-in on the Google ecosystem, Gmail, Contacts, Calendar all work perfectly.
This time around I decided to give the native apps a try. The Contacts app recognized all of my contacts associated with my Google account - that's good - but then I noticed:
- My Google avatar changed to a silly Samsung avatar, on my phone and on other's phones that saw me in their text app
- My son owns an S8 and his avatar changed too - for me and him - he didn't notice his avatar changed for himself, it seemed to be triggered by my getting an N8
- My other family members, all own new S8's, have avatars that didn't change. I don't think they "shared" their profile in the Contacts app - my son and I did.
- When I view myself in the Samsung Contacts app, my phone info is present, but none of the notes that I have for myself - that data just isn't there.
So, I installed the Google Contacts and Calendar apps and after they were set as defaults, everything is good again.
Questions:
- If I delete the app data and cache on the Samsung Contacts app so that I can "mothball" it for the time being, will I lose my Google contact info as well, or does it have it's own separate, parallel data store?
- If I decide to use an app like Package Disabler Pro or BK Disabler on the Contacts app, will doing so negatively affect my Google contact db?
- Do any of you that rely on the Google ecosystem use the Samsung Contacts app? If so, why?
Thanks!
