Contacts keeps crashing when trying to add a new contact

It's been a while since I needed to add a new contact to my phone, but I've just tried it many many time and it crashes:

I've given the phone a reboot, but still it doesn't work. I've even tried "wipe cache partition"in startup mode, as well as clearing the apps cache itself.

Any other ideas on what to try?

I'm running:

Android 7.1.1

Which phone do you have? Are all of your contacts saved to your Google account, or are you trying to add the contact to the local Phone account?

Thanks for the reply, and apologies for the the late response. For some reason I didn't get notified of your reply via email :/

The problem was on a Nexus 6, running Android 7.1.1. Interestingly, the problem has now stopped since I did a factory reset (for another issue), so maybe that has fixed it. Who knows! (the error was far from helpful)
