I was wondering if anyone happened to know of any way to remove the phone and 3G capabilities from an Eris so that I can use it via WiFi for apps and email and not have it try to connect to the Verizon network and mess up my newly activated phone. I did a brief search for ROMs of said nature, but didnt see anything and figured I would reach out to the community for ideas or recommendations.

Thanks!

you don't have to do anything. if you just activated a new phone with the same number, when you power on the eris is will show no service in the notification bar, but will still work just like it did before but without cellular service. just cut wifi on and you're good to go.

There should be a check box in the settings (I don't know exactly where) that is called "cellular network" just un-check it.
You could also try putting it in airplane mode, then turning wi-fi back on.

^^^ This.

You don't need a special ROM. Turn off the cell radios. We use the old Hero over wi-fi only.

There is now a script that you can run to remove the cellular radios from a custom ROM that you are running if you are rooted.

[Script] WiFi Only (great for inactive devices) - xda-developers

(Note, though, that if the phone is already inactive and you want to remove the prompt to reactivate the phone on bootup, you need to be running a close-to-stock, HTC frameworks based ROM like xtrSENSE, xtrROM, PlainJane, etc.)

There is also a Froyo-based ROM called the MP3ROM with the cell radios disabled, if you want to go that route. [ROM] TheROM V0.14 | TheMP3Rom V0.13 [FROYO] [SPEED] - xda-developers
