If I'm on a 911 call WITHOUT GOOGLE MAPS LOADED, how do I get my GPS coordinates from my smartphone for a 911 operator?

The phone is supposed to automatically share GPS coordinates on a 911 call: https://www.safety.com/calling-911/. Have you had an experience where the 911 dispatcher was unable to see that information, and asked you for the coordinates?

Thanks. No. I'm just curious. In a real emergency, and if didn't know exactly where I was, could my smartphone, with a few keystrokes, reveal my GPS coordinates. That would of course, be a backup if the 911 operator couldn't identify where I was.

You might want to call your carrier's customer support line and double check with them about this.

OK. Thanks. Is there a way for the Pixel 3 to reveal the GPS coordinates without using Google maps?

I can't speak for 911 throughout the country, however in New York they see your location on a monitor.

Do you mean without the help of any app, or just without Google Maps? There are plenty of 3rd party apps that can give your coordinates as well.

I thought that since the smartphone has a GPS internally, I could just use the phone to tell me without a 3rd party app. Anyway, I have been accused of Chasing rainbows before, so if I really want to do it, I guess I'll just bite the bullet and get it. As always, thanks.

There are other possibilities but they will involve using apps. Most IM apps, like WhatsApp or Telegram, can share your location with anyone you want.

In situations without an internet connection you can use you camera. Take a picture and you can see the coordinates in the gallery app. You need to have location enabled in the camera app settings.

And one more. You can have a widget on your home screen that shows your location. It would need a slow refresh rate to avoid battery drain, I guess.

I just checked in KWGT (Kustom Widgets) and it would take five minutes to create a widget on your home screen that would show the exact coordinates including the name of the place where you are. A refresh time of half an hour or more, depending on your needs, should be more than enough.

From what I can find, raw GPS data is only available to you if you're developing an app.

A great thread and a good question to ask! Thank you for sharing, OP!

In Canada, when you call 911, the dispatcher also has your location. They sometimes confirm it with you to make sure, but they got it. Reassuring, for sure.

It's the same on the west coast... your coordinates automatically pop up, nothing needs to be open. It shows on your phone screen your location, which is the same info they see, they don't even need to ask. It's actually a very nice feature in an emergency.
