You can long press copy,,, with the stock text app. I have used it and it works for me.

I read reviews that say Hand cent hasn't worked well on Froyo.

Yeah, I loved handcent until Froyo. Then it gave me force close errors after every other text message. I now use chompsms and everything is fine...for now.

Download Handcent and you'll have the best messaging experience available. Totally blows the stock messaging app out of the water. Copy and paste is easy in Handcent with just a long press

Handcent just came out with an update today that was supposed to fix some forced close issues. I think you should retry it.
