Copying images *to* the Galaxy Nexus

I am having problems with this also. I seem to be able to copy and paste a few at a time but then it eventually locks up and not only stops copying, but prevents me from even seeing the directory until i unplug then plug my nexus back in again

If you delete the "Camera" folder in the DCIM directory, and then recreate it will work fine. There seems to be some weird permissions issue on that folder. I was able to copy with no issues after doing that.

On my wife's GN I installed mtp on my Ubuntu 11.10 machine at home to copy over her files from her old DX, but since all of mine files was here at work on my Ubuntu 11.04 I ended up using adb push and had no issues pushing 629 of my pictures/videos.

Same issue here, the copy process just stalls after 3 pics then says the device has stopped responding or has been disconnected. Mass storage would have worked much better! Had this happen on a Win 7 64 and Win 7 32 machine. Already frustrated with this phone. This is BS!

Easy fix, just switch your phone from Media device to Camera after you plug it in, it will search and install new drivers and work just fine

I wish ... tried that and it errors out immediately when trying to transfer. Tomorrow I am going to reinstall the OS (needs to be done anyway) and see what happens.

Maybe a custom rom down the road can open mass storage ... has already been said it IS supported in ICS.

Had same problem. Did the same thing the poster a few up did (went to Samsung's site, downloaded USB drivers for GN, restarted computer... everything worked fine. I do know that I couldnt copy over any images unless the phone was unlocked.

I already have the Samsung GN drivers that is how I unlocked the boot loader. BUT I did finally figure out I can use Win Media Player to "sync" the pics to the phone after importing them into Media Player first. Only thing left is it will not sync the .3gp videos I have previously taken with my tbolt so that sucks.

I have been able to transfer music that I have downloaded from Amazon. However, music that I saved to my computer from a CD will not show up. I can see the files copied to the Nexus in Windows Media Player, but not on the GN. Can anyone help?

I'm having the same issue and the only thing that worked for me, other than downloading a third party app, was syncing via Windows Media Player.

If you are running windows xp, you need to have the most current version of windows media player. Windows XP doesn't natively support MTP, but if you download the latest Windows Media Player, you will.

I was able to (finally) get all 308 photos to transfer by first turning on USB debigging and then utilizing Camera (PTP) for transfer.

Anyone who's still having trouble, turn on USB debugging first and try again.

OK I ***THINK*** I have the issue figured out! For me at least I hope this helps. I feel dumb!!!
I was trying to copy pictures to the DCIM/Camera folder which results in the transfer hanging every time!
I was able to just drag and drop with NO problems to subfolders I created in the PICTURES folder off the root dir. Try this it should take care of any issues. Also when I try to sync HD .3gp files from my Tbolt through Media Player it says it cant do it because the phone can't play the format. In this case just drag and drop those files in the "Movies" dir off the root dir and they play like a champ!!! Also this is done with MTP so it is perfectly fast!

Simply put you can copy out of the DCIM folder but NOT into it. Not sure if that was posted before but now I finally know and hate my phone less!

Now if I would only get voicemail notifications!!!

Having trouble also. I plugged in the GN to Wwindows 7 and windows said "Samsung GN - downloading drivers". I selected 7 pictures to copy...only copied 6 before it died. Next I tried the PTP transfer...again computer downloaded drivers. I selected 1 pic and copied to the picture folder and this worked BUT when I go to the camera gallery App to view the picture you cannot re size it or do anything else like you can do when the pics are in the camera folder.

Can anyone explain the process of downloading the drivers from the Samsung site. Once I get there and click to download what is going to happen next and what should I do to install these drivers on the computer.....Thanks in advance.

Go download the Galaxy Nexus drivers ... you can find the link in one of these threads. I'll look later if you can't find it. It's just an .exe you run. After you run it plug in the phone to the computer and just leave it as MTP. Now open your device manager and find where the phone has popped up. When I was unlocking my boot loader it showed up under Other Devices as Android 1.0 or something close to that. It may be in your Portable Devices section already. Right click it and choose Update Driver Software. Now click on the bottom where it says Browse my computer for driver software. Next again click at the bottom where it says Let me pick from a list of devices drivers on my computer. Now you should be able to click the top selection in the box to Show all Devices. It will sit for a min and say retrieving a list. When it is done on the left your looking for Samsung. One will likley have a few of them and as you click each one on the left it will give you a list of devices on the right. Go through them until on the right you get Samsung Android ADB Interface and chose that. From here it should install and you should now be good with the Samsung drivers (reboot for good measure.. This is what finally worked for me and allowed me to unlock my boot loader and is still working fine now that I know the ins and outs of copying files over.

Thanks I'll give this a try. Maybe the Dec 13 Samsung drivers are newer than the ones windows said it downloaded.

all ive found to transfer photos so far is by using Windows Media Player...when you plug your GN in, choose the Windows Media option. All i did was make a folder on my pc with what i wanted to put on it, then added it under Manage Libraries under File, then selected all the photos and put them in the panel on the right side. Then click sync. goes pretty fast.

hope this helps someone and i hope they resolve these issues soon

FYI Guys, here's a really good, 100% working temporary fix from Google's forums:

"Glad to see it is a known issue to Samsung. In the meantime, on both
of the systems I have tried it with, you can get around the hang-up by
selecting all the files you want to move and dragging them ONTO the
icon of the destination folder on your Gnex (i.e. don't open the
window for the destination folder and drag to that, just drag them
onto the folder icon itself). Hope this gets fixed in the next
update."

Worked like a charm for me, wanted to share!
