Android Central Question

After android 8.0 update my sd card got corrupted. I kept close to 1000 pics on my phone. Family friends send to me. I just recently lost my brother to cystic fibrosis in june. I kept pics of him and my family. Im 53 and im not tech savy. So i didnt know i had to take out the card to do an update. Card won't work in pc. Went to computer stores they tried to help. Sd card wont read in phone or computers.
If anyone has any ideas please help?
Thank you
Deb

Welcome to Android Central! Our condolences about your brother. SD cards aren't supposed to be affected by a system update -- it may have just been coincidental. If the card isn't even recognized by the phone or a computer, then it's almost certainly not recoverable. You could try looking into forensic data recovery specialists, but these services can cost quite a lot.

You weren't taking advantage of Google Photos auto-backup by any chance, were you? If not, I strongly recommend it to prevent future mishaps like this: https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6193313?co=GENIE.Platform=Android&hl=en.

I realize this is too little too late, but SD cards are inherently more unreliable than onboard phone memory, and should never be used as the sole storage for important data. A phone's internal storage also shouldn't be relied upon either, since you never know when the phone might get damaged, or some other component might fail. Always keep important data backed up somewhere safe, like a good cloud storage service, or a physical hard drive (and if you do the latter, it's best to back it up to two separate hard drives).
