Cracked screen

Was skeptical of buying another Samsung edged phone as I managed to crack my s7 edge screen 3 times.
But I bought the note 9 anyway. Apparently the glass material is more durable. Bought the Samsung standing case which feels pretty durable. Didn't bother with a screen protector because I never have.
Yesterday I dropped my phone like many mobile phone consumers do and it cracked the screen. Because of the edge screen the lip of the case is unable to protect the screen from drops. I have quite a few phones and never had issues with cracked screens from drops, because a case would be protecting it.
The cost to repair the screen is 340 dollars here in Canada. Repaired by a Samsung authorized shop, which is the best way to go.
There is no point to this other than I'm pretty fed up with breaking these curved edged screens. I'm sure some of you never ever ever ever broke your edged screen phone before and your super careful with your expensive devices because you take complete care of them and read them bedtime stories at bedtime. But they make cases for phones for people like me.
Now I will get this phone repaired eventually and buy a screen protector as it seems these curved edged phones need to be in a pillow at all times to prevent cracking the screen. I hate screen protectors. If you read this, I apologize.

No, they just need to not be dropped. If I understand correctly, most screen protectors mostly help avoid scratches, and do little to avoid cracks upon impact. I have never used a case or a screen protector, but have never broken a phone because I don't drop them. But as you say, people differ in that regard. Given your continuing track record of repeatedly dropping your phones, I would question whether expensive glass-edged devices are a good choice for you. Just something to consider.

I think most people drop their phones than don't. I'm just a consumer who buys pretty, expensive devices expecting them to be durable with a case the manufacturer built for the device.

Like I said. I've purchased other phones that also cost money and have not broke any of other phone buy a Samsung edged screen. I know people catch feelings over phone discussions and opinions. But just because I drop stuff doesn't mean I shouldn't be buying them. We shouldn't be buying cars either. Cause we tend to get into accidents.

To begin with, a curved screen can be more prone to cracking than a flat screen. The curve is done by curving the glass when it's hot (probably whitiish-red hot), and it has to be annealed to keep it from cracking when it cools. It's that bad. Just letting it cool by itself would crack most curved screens. If the annealing isn't done properly (and doing it in mass production almost guarantees that most of them will have at least one or two tiny flaws), dropping the phone on its back could cause the screen to crack.

As Gary02468 said, screen protectors are protection against scratching and rubbing. (And a lot of them are oleophobic - finger oil doesn't stick to them, so you don't leave fingerprints or smudges.) But they're not break-resistant.

If you want to protect the screen from breaking (it still can, though, if the annealing was done really badly - tapping the screen with a nail could cause the edge to break if it's that bad), use an Otterbox Defender case. I had a phone with a gorilla Glass 3 screen lobbed at a wall, screen first. In an Otterbox. Not a mark on the wall, the case or the phone. Well worth the $50 I paid for that case. I don't use a phone without an Otterbox. (Not advertising, it's just a great case.)

Patchworks Level cases come up fast enough to give some protection to the screen. In your case I would honestly suggest this case AND the liquid screen Protector with the guarantee. They will pay for the repair if your screen breaks. I can find the link if you're interested.

I had dropped my Note 9 about 3 feet hit the corner and screen, I have a slim case and dome screen protector , only the corner by the spen got scratched to bare aluminum but nothing to the screen.

It dont Matter curved or flat if it gets hit right place that screen can break.

If I'd crashed my previous car three times, gotten a new one, and quickly crashed that too, then yes, I'd reconsider having a car. :)

But as I said, it was just something to consider. You began by expressing skepticism yourself about getting another curved-screen phone. But whatever you decide is fine with me. :) Good luck!

My previous phone to the Note 9 was the S7 edge...it was my first curved screen phone...had it since release date...always in a case...Spigen Neo Hybrid i believe, no screen protector...dropped it maybe 4 times in those 3 yrs....never cracked the screen, guess I was just lucky...i did however drop it once and it left the slightest lil mark on the screen...you couldn't really see it, but you could feel it, it hit a corner when it fell. I'm with Mustang on this one...I think it's all fate...in how and where you drop it and how it hits/impacts.

I think it's all fate[,] in how and where you drop it and how it hits/impacts.
There's no fate, just a mixture of skill and luck. The more you resign yourself to fate, the more likely you are to put up with bad outcomes that may be preventable.

I have cracked one screen. It was a curved screen that cracked from a freakishly high fall while in a wallet case, which I rarely use.

I also have dropped all my other curved screen phones, and I have been lucky. I use very slim cases.

Seems if you are prone to cracking these screens, you may need to go with an OtterBox type case.

pay for insurance.. I cracked mine as well trying to help someone change a flat tire. did the insurance claim and will from now on.. pass anyone without second thought haha. also glass screen protectors also help against drops not just scratches as I have broken many screen protectors but only 1 phones glass

I basically threw mine on a tile floor accidentally (with concrete under the tile) and it didn't get so much as a scratch. The impact did manage to gouge a hole completely through the case though. Sounds like you either need to get a different phone or get a more protective case.

What do you think of the Supcase Unicorn Beetle compared to the Defender?

I never used one, so it's just an opinion, but I think it should be almost as good, from the descriptions I've read.

You have a history of dropping phones and cracking them yet you keep doing the same thing over and over. I would never use a $1,000 phone without protection.
