AT&T Galaxy S8 Create Custom Type for phone numbers

Hello. I am updating my Contacts and when I Edit their phone number I see I can "Create Custom Type" which is great! However, I have to create custom type for each one. (for the type I am using) Is there a way to keep your Custom Type as a selection, or do you need to do this each time you Edit a Contact?
