Critiques for Pixel 3 and Android P

Granted, I'm not on a pixel 3, but I've had no issues whatsoever with Pie... it's been the best version of Android I've ever used. Best Bluetooth, best battery life, no glitches or surprises, everything does what it's supposed to do when it's supposed to do it. I couldn't be happier :-D

And before I installed it I was sure it was going to be a disaster from all the negatives I was reading. Now shouldn't all 3 generations of pixels have the same version of Pie except for some very minor changes in the 3?

Correct all Pixels should be on 9.0. Final OS update for the OG Pixels. Time flies...

Listen, I was vocally against 9.0 in this very forum. I was a huge advocate of the three button system and other "traditions". That changed when I settled on the fact that Android needs to progress and move forward all the time. 9.0 is the most advanced Android has ever been. There's room for improvement, but it's so much more powerful than 8.0 was.

Long way to go with Android gestures. They don't even exist in P if you ask me. Google simply took the Recent button away and replaced it with a swipe up for recent app list and 2 (or long) swipe ups for app drawer. Left home and back buttons at the bottom of the screen. You can hardly call that a gesture navigation. Do I like it? Ya don't mind the change. But if you want to see true gesture navigation on Android, folks should check out how OnePlus implemented that with Oxygen OS on 6T.

I've seen Oxygen OS and their implementation is okay. Doesn't really advance things in the same manner as native 9.0, but their system has appeal. You say "simply took the Recent button away ..." I see that as the one of the biggest improvements when taken at full value.

The app switcher in 9.0 is far more powerful than the old system. The button itself served little purpose and if Android is looking to continue to simplify the stem, reducing points of engagement makes sense.

We both agree gesture navigation is at it's infancy. Plenty of improvements to be had no matter what the OS is. It's the way of the future.

Google's 1st iteration at it feels incomplete.

Agreed. I think 9.0 is definitely transitional.. Back button is probably next to go, I would imagine.

You can use the Home button for recent apps or GA as well

I hope not, the back button is so useful.

It is indeed useful, but inconsistent in the current format. Sometimes the button is there, other times it's not. Better to just remove all doubt and get rid of the actual button/arrow. Replace with a gesture and keep some of the functions, which also need improvement with consistency. Sometimes it takes you to your previous function or screen(s), sometimes previous app, sometimes home, etc.

I mean, ideally Google will get rid of both the back button and the home button. Home button is serving less and less of a purpose as changes evolve. GA is located in the search bar now, so there's no need for it to continue to occupy the home button. 9.0 is set to reduce having to always go home anyway, so that can be eliminated with some gesture as well.

While I'm on it, the App Actions feature (which is missing from my app drawer today for whatever reason) should be pulled out of there and replace the weather card that's at the top of Google Feed/Discovery. That feature is just lost in a "junk drawer" and needs to be pulled out for greater visibility. User adoption of that feature has got to be in the single digit percentage because of location alone.

And where is the App Slices feature??!!?? .. We're coming up on 6 months since final build and it's STILL not live in 9.0.

He meant to say the phone looks like it's from 1999. And yes I agree. Had note 9 and still have 6t. Pixel 2 xl looks old school when compared to these 2 devices.

I disagree that his description had anything to do with phones from 1999. Saying a Pixel looks like it's from 1999 is quite a bit of a stretch. Looks are personal preference so it's really irrelevant.

Very very very far stretch..

My sister is bringing me my Pixel 3 in two weeks. Nothing the whiny critique had to say or that comments in this thread have made me any less eager to get the phone. I feel sorry for people how need a pretty phone to feel good. I rather like Google's looks.

Yup.... Don't swear it. If I listened to every critique I would be device less.

Linus' whiney review focused on minor items which software updates have or will fix. He sounded like David Spade ******** about the weather.

You know, I think there is a lot of misinformation/confusion being spread by some of these 9.0 comparison videos. I've watched two (posted below) in the last week that are just riddled with inaccuracies and contradictions. I think it's just popular to hate on Google/Pixels. Why that is I don't know, but some of the misrepresentations are astounding to me.

Personally, an OEM's skin seems like a very silly thing to declare "better", as personal preferences are all that mattes. But at least present the facts correctly if you are going to critique any of them.

I swear, most of these people are just personalities and nothing more. Reminds me of an article I was reading about Twitter earlier today... In 1802 the Scottish critic Francis Jeffrey groused in the Edinburgh Review that “hairdressers and valets write amatory verses; coffeehouse waiters publish political pamphlets; and shoemakers and tailors astonish the world with plans for reforming the constitution.” ...and add to that list, YouTube Tech reviewers.

Well all manufacturers use a skin or launcher even the pixel is a skin over andriod. They just saying its skin (pixel) is very limited in performing task or customization. That's what nexus use to be about and looks like one plus has taken that direction which I personally think it's the best skin on android.
