First thing on the to do list with any of my new phones is new wallpapers!

Home screen wallpaper changed just fine...but..

If I switch the unlock wallpaper to anything other than a default image, its insanely dark when turning the screen on.

What's up with this?

Bump

Am I the only one who gets a near pitch black unlock screen when using an image from gallery rather than a default wallpaper?

This is normal, it helps read notifications better and saves on battery.

I understand about going darker to save battery, but why does the default images that you pick from show up the same brightness as on the Home screen? Seems that if the reason is to save battery life, then the default images should be just as dark on the lockout screen as any pic I choose from gallery.

If it wants to darken them, fine, but certainly it didn't need to go so dark that I can barely make out the picture. My S5 never darkened the pics I used on lock screen.

Not only that, but when you use a pic from Samsung themes, it doesn't darken.
This should be labeled a bug a fixed by Samsung as its silly to only do this with personal pictures.

Thank you!!

It is really dumb. Glad I'm not the only one bothered by this!

This should be added to the list of things that need to have toggle.

Well I got on Samsung.com this morning and did a online chat and asked about it, she had me try with and without auto brightness, didn't change anything, she had me boot into safe mode, and got the same results with and without auto brightness.

Then she said to try powering off and then boot holding the up volume, home button and power key till recovery mode comes up and do a factory reset.

I haven't tried that yet, not sure if I should try it or exchange for another one. She said the Factory data reset in settings/backup and reset cleans everything but personal stuff like pics etc, but the one in recovery mode cleans everything including personal files.

I don't know if it is worth it to boot into recovery and try it or not.

I was mistaken, apparently there is a setting in the backup and reset, called reset settings that clears all but personal stuff, the factory data reset from what Verizon tells me does the same thing as going into recovery mode.

Verizon told me to bring it there and if they can't figure it out, they will exchange for another one.

Ok, well I found what may be the problem. In settings / Personal / Lock screen and security When I had Screen lock type set to Swipe, I set Unlock effect to none. Well that is what caused it for me. If I stayed in Swipe, or used a pin or used fingerprint, the lock screen was dark using a pic from my gallery.

But if I changed back to swipe, set Unlock effect to either Water droplet or Sparkling bubbles, my picture came up fine no matter what I chose to unlock the device, be it swipe, pin, fingerprint, etc.

So NYRSteve and anyone else who is reading this, try temporarily set unlock to swipe and make sure unlock effect is not set to none, then reset you screen lock type and see if your pic comes up normal now.

My buddy picked up the S6 on T Mobile yesterday. His lock screen does NOT do this.

I will try this fix now and edit post with results! Thanks!

Edit, dark filter over lock wallpaper is removed with either of the two unlock effects. Without an unlock effect, it comes back. This needs to be fixed because unlock effects are nothing but extra battery usage!

So as it stands right now, the only way to have custom images as lock screen wallpaper, without the dark filter over it, is to have one of the two unlock effects enabled. Ugh.

Yeah, hopefully it will get fixed in a update.

But now if you choose a different way to unlock the phone, like a pin number or password or fingerprint, it'll stay bright and once you do the code it pops up direct.

Still needs to be fixed.

im still having this problem...do you think it is a reason for replacement? i consider it as a software bug or smth

This only use to happen to me on 5.1.x ever since I updated to 6.0.x I haven't had this problem. It was a bug I guess that got fixed
