Setup: Google Pixel 2, Android 8.1.0
App: default Android Message app

How can I add a custom .mp3 and assign it under Settings/Notification/Sound/ in the Message app?

I have loaded .mp3 files in /Ringtones as well as /Notifications, I can only see my custom .mp3 files added to the default list while assigning Ringtones, but not in Message app.

Welcome to Android Central! Moved from the Android Apps forum to the General Help forum, since the former is intended for developers to promote their apps.

It should work. Where is the mp3 file from? There's no DRM protection on it, right?

Is it the same mp3 file in both the /Ringtones and /Notifications directory, or are you talking about different sound files?

I created the mp3 file using an mp3 app to clip a tone for text messages, it worked fine on my iOS. I downloaded and copied the same file into both folders. I can see it when assigning ringtone to the phone, but not in Android sms Message app.

That's odd. Try renaming the file in the /Notifications directory to something else, in case there's some kind of conflict caused by the same file in two different directories.
