Customization without Rooting

Are programs like Launcher Pro worth it? I might like to play around with the aesthetics of things, but I don't have much experience with Android. Are these programs "glitch free" - will they work correctly without slowing anything down? Thanks in advance.

I'm using ADW EX. No problems so far. I had it installed on my previous phone.
