Coming from VZW/tbolt unlimited this is going to be harder than I thought.
I had looked over my history with VZW and I was using 2Gb/month regularly.
So I figured 3Gb/month should be no problem....well...
I know there is the initial playing and downloading, etc. but I went over 600Mb in 3 days.
This is all LTE data. Not 4g or 3g only. I looked online at the usage and it's all 'PTA' and records as SENT not received. I even called and they weren't much help.
But it appears to be accurate. At least from what I can tell. I got a data usage app and the size file from the market was recorded at the same size.
That's fine because I can see that size and will be using wifi for those from now on.
However, using the browser (I like Dolphin but the stock did the same) seems to use excessive data. I don't like mobile viewing....it ruins the experience and I haven't done that since my blackberry. I loaded the full version of androidcentral.com and it was 3Mb. So I can see how this quickly adds up....
I did have a tmobile user do the same thing with his sensation and it was only 1.5Mb
That was a quirky test but I think there could be a difference in calculation?? He was on 4g.
I had someone with the Tbolt on LTE do the same and it was also 3Mb.
Viewing you tube video through the browser was 40Mb.
I really don't think my type of browsing is any different than it was on VZW but I can easily see how it gets up there quickly. Which sucks...

Coming from an unlimited data plan with Sprint to the limits of a 3gig plan on At&t made me a little nervous as well.

It's funny how when you have unlimited data you don't really need to think about these things and yet you tend to be more conservative with your usage (at least I was), although it's not necessary.

I switch to At&t and all of sudden I find myself having to think about when, where, or even how often I use the plan data, and I find myself using a bit more at a faster clip?

I have started trying to take advantage of wifi spots when it's practical. But I understand what you're saying.

I've yet to get throttled with on my Grandfathered Unlimited plan. 5g on LTE is a huge chunk of data. I've streamed some netflix on it and haven't hit the cap (yet).

i don't know if they throttled me yet but ever since i've gotten my note i've been over 5GB every month.... IT'S AWESOME!!!! Netflix at work easy day!

If I remember correctly, the Opera browser sends you compressed web data from their servers.

Originally LTE Advanced and like WiMax Gen 5 (maybe 4) were what were really intended to be real 4g by the ITU. The problem was all the carriers didn't want to wait that long to be able to say they had a 4g network, so the ITU modified it so that the carriers could developing there network to indicate it was 4g. to me it is a joke what they all call 4g.

The HSPA+ networks are more like 3.25g and LTE is 3.5. Hopefully the ability to distinguish gets easier as time goes on.

I'm gonna use the android forums app instead of browsing to here.
Any idea if that uses less data?
How about tapatalk?

I am using the Android forums app and I think it is based on tapatalk. The saved images go to /download/tapatalk_*

They told me its $10 for every gig you go over your plan, so that sounds fair to me. I have the 5 gig anyways

Yes and that's why I don't understand the 5 gig plan. It costs $20 more than the 3Gb. If you go over 3Gb you pay $10/gb....same for 5Gb. So if you are on the 5Gb plan and only use 4, you pay $50 where on the 3Gb plan you would pay $40.
I'm wondering if the difference is if they start throttling you.....

With the 5 gig u get the hotspot feature that you don't have to pay seperate for . The data you use comes from your plan.

Your saying that if I go by an att wifi spot (have wifi on) it autoconnects (tested and it does) that any data used is part of my 3Gb?
First I've heard of this. Do you have a ilnk?

Just checked and it says free att basic wifi. 5gb says the same but the data includes notebook. So I guess you can tether.

No Wifi does NOT count against your plan. With the 5GB plan you can legitimately turn on the phones WiFi hotspot feature and use it for say your kids iPod etc... that data counts against your plan. ONLY "unlimited" data plans get throttled. All tiered plans are full bore to network capacity at all times. Users just keep paying ~$10 GB/month...
