Debating on the G2 - Questions

I would take into consideration what you said if it made any sense, but it doesn't

My honest opinion, Moto failed the consumer with all 4 of their new phones. I have been a Moto user for 10 + years. These are mid range phones at best. Not one of them would be considered to be a Flagship Phone. If you keep a phone for 6 months then buy a new one, then one of these phone may work, but if you try to go on a 2 year run, then no. I look at the hardware of my phone, what is in it, and try to be forward looking with the Technology. Look at the hardware of Moto and then look at the other MFG's

It is just my opinion

This phone doesn't have top of the line specs but it performs better than most flagship phones. I'd take the Moto X and its "mid-range" specs over an HTC One or G2 any day

Man, I change repeatedly. It's an expensive problem. I keep doing research on this phone. The only thing I'm not totally sure on is their skin and the button placement. I guess I worry about LG's update and support history, as well. Everything I've read about it looks good, though. I'd like to get something that will last around 6 months for me. This looks like it could based on specs alone. But part of me still loves a Nexus-like experience, which the X provides. But I also worry that the X won't have enough bells and whistles for me.
The buttons were a thought I had as well, but oddly enough, you adjust pretty quickly to them. As far as the skin goes, its not too bad, but if you don't like it, that's what third party launchers are for. As for the updates, they are already speaking about updating the g2 to kitkat. Give it a try, if you don't like you cab sell and always get your money out of it.

The skin only changes the homescreen and app drawer. It doesn't change the settings, gallery, or status bar for example.

With the current VZW sale ($49 on, $449 no contract) the G2 is best value on Verizon (and many think it's the best phone). I love the G2 way more than I thought I would and would only consider trading for a Moto X for a little better size/one handed use case - that is rumored but still not an actual option and I'm still concerned about the Moto X camera. Wireless charging and battery life on the G2 are killer and I always thought 1080P on a phone was overkill - the G2 screen is great - much better than I thought it would be.

The camera on the X is actually better than the one on the G2 though, the update helped a lot
Battery is also not always the case, someone in the Moto X thread said his battery on the G2 was 4 hours tops on the stock ROM and from what I've seen the X can get upwards of 5 :p
Although I have seen more than 7 on the G2. YMMV

If they are getting only 4 hours than they are doing something wrong

I think he was referring to screen on time.

I actually picked up a Developer Edition Moto X yesterday. Should be here next week. I'm going to give that a go first. I just can't get passed the near stock experience. Skins start to drive me nuts after awhile. If I have some issues with it being too plain, however, I think the G2 is my next choice.

Thanks to everyone who joined in the conversation!

I'm sure that if you wanted a stock experience you could flash a custom ROM but just having it out of the box is so much better.
It being a dev edition is a plus :D

I'm actually in a similar spot. I've got the very old Droid Charge so a lot of my questions are similar. I went to a store to check out the S4 and the G2 and it's pretty much a wash to me between the two except for price. Since it's $50 to upgrade this weekend and droidlife mentioned the code 'slick50' to get $50 off, it's a free upgrade for me whereas the S4 is $200. I glanced at the Note 3 but it's huge and I don't think I'm ready to move that large - plus it's more expensive than the S4.

So thanks for starting this discussion because it's been helpful.

Honestly I never root anything. I was going to wait on MotoMaker Monday, but I decided to just get the Dev Edition now. Mainly because I have a feeling it'll have a little better resale that something I create. Yes, I am purchasing something based on what I think I can get out of it later. :-)

I think the G2 and S4 are definitely comparable, with a few things leaning to either side. And being that you can get a G2 for free on an upgrade, I wouldn't blame you one bit if you went with it.

There you go :)
I plan on keeping my GS4 even after I get another phone. I'll probably use it for gaming or listening to music but there's nothing wrong with thinking of the resale value :P
Glad you could make a decision. Enjoy :D

Thanks! If I decide I hate it, then it's G2 here I come!
