December Update is out

Wife's pixel 2 xl finally got the December patch. No soup for me on 3 XL yet.

Really, that's weird! Unless Google servers are being bombarded with the December security update patch.
If I am not mistaken, many here have not gotten the update yet.

I was thinking about flashing it but then remembered that phone will get wiped out when I do bootloader unlock. Urrgggghhh. I'll just wait.

Well, that's just weird. Hopefully Google speeds it up that's for sure.

No no no! You don't unlock the bootloader. The below link takes you to the ota builds and you just sideload them with a locked bootloader using the instructions.

You keep all data intact.

Yep the drops are COOL. I am loving live captions.

Ps. I suggest checking the OTAs on the 31st just to see if they create a Fi variant and then side load that one. This is my plan. :)
How do you enable live captions?

When you play any videos change the volume and a new box appears it’s a toggle to turn it off/on very cool!
Sweet. Just used it. Very nice. Eats up battery but definitely handy for times when you want to quickly watch something and not bother folks around you.

Yeah I might go back to side loading, here it is the 16th and I still don't have it. Just gotta lookup how to do it again as its been awhile. Haven't done it since I was on the Pixel 2 over a year ago.

No... it didn't, but the email did stoke my frustration.

Maybe next update they'll make Pixels more helpful by fixing the Check For Updates button (like they said they had done 2-3 years ago) to make it actually initiate the update if it has been released, rather than being a tool whose only actual function is to mislead users.

On OnePlus phones there is an updater app that makes it easy when the update is out but not showing on your phone. I wonder if someone could write one for pixel phones

My best belief ( guess ) is that Google has released it BUT the wireless carriers can block/unblock the update going to their customers till they feel that they have tested it and approved it.

Google Fi it seems has not finished testing it and if they find a issue Google will create a version of the update for that particular carrier.

This has happened before already.

I received the same email on the same exact date. My first thought was, "Gee, thanks Google for rubbing it in."

Yep this fits my hypotheses. For some reason that is unknown Google Fi is blocking the update to its customers. With you using a inactive device it was able to apply the update.

Hmmm.
