Deciding between the razr and nexus

It's probably not a hardware issue at all, most likely it is just a poorly written baseband (radio code) and will be fixed in an update much like the Drpod Charge was.

if samsung knew about the charge and it having issues and if the galaxy nexus does have the same radio why wasn't the "radio code" included in the update already it should be easy to fix if they did it before.

i just think theres something more to it.

They are two different devices with different radios and processors. My point was that like the Charge this will be fixed in an OTA.

I went into the verizon store to buy a Nexus and left with a Razr.
1. Both phones had equal signal strengh
2. I called my wife with both phones, hands down Razr wins, on the Nexus her voice sounded tiny and likewize on her end.
3. I watched a youtube video on both theRazr and Nexus, Nexus speaker volume....lets just i could not hear it in the store where as the Razr was coming in loud and clear.
4. I looked no further as these are the most important to me.

You can't trust signal strength in Verizon stores as most have a repeater in them. In real world conditions the Nexus has very poor signal compared to almost any other phone, particularly the RAZR (and Bionic) the difference is night and day to me.

- Razr has an sd card, nexus does not.
- Razr has 10mp camera, nexus has 8mp.
- I believe the nexus has a removable battery, the Razr does not.
-There are a plethora of nexus custom roms, all ics; Razr has limited and they're mostly gb.

The rest of the differences in specs on phone scoop are negligible. I don't listen to the signal complaints because that's subjective and geographical. So basically, it comes down to small spec differences and if you want a wide variety of roms. Given the choice, I'll probably get the Razr, since I want to be able to take my sd card if the phone craps out... I can't imagine what you're supposed to do if that happens on the nexus and your pics and data/apps are backed up to virtual sd space... On a dead phone.

Isn't the razrs camera 8mp and gns 5mp?

-Razr has 8, Nexus has 5 MP.
-Yes you can remove the battery but if you swap batteries NFC will not work correctly (they have been rather vague as to what exactly that means but the NFC chip is in the battery)
-Razr will get ICS early next year, and custom roms will come eventually as they always do.
-The Nexus has a crappy radio, RAZR an excellent one
-Lack of a removable card is a pain but the but but the GN has a generous amount of on-board storage basally makes up for it. If you are a G-Plus member your pics and videos are backed up and if you aren't then there are numerous other ways to back these things up (dropbox, etc.) Like it or not the non removable storage is the future, Google themselves said so when the Galaxy S came out.

Yea, sorry I was going off memory.
As for the sd card, backing up to gdocs simply doesn't cut it. If I nandroid and back up apps and data, I doubt its possible to upload those nandroid and app backups to my gdoc account. So basically if the phone craps out, all that data is lost, which is why sd cards are used to begin with. If I'm wrong and someone has a nexus to explain better, please let me know.

However the camera and battery don't matter to me as much as an sd card. I don't see much else performance wise that's different... It seems esthetic and small personal preferences to me.

Not Google Docs I said Google Plus and the pics are uploaded automatically so there is nothing that you have to do there. As for the loss of app data stored on the memory card point taken. SD cards crap out from time to time as well so you're fooling yourself if you think it is safe there. Either way you are gonna want to save some of that stuff to your computer if you are that concerned about it.

I agree that the screen and camera are basically preference.

Rezound.....bottom line if signal matters and calls are important.

I remember some of your G Nex posts.... Got burned by the G Nex too?

I have Fedex delivery for the G Nex coming tomorrow....and my apt alone could be considered the boondocks as far as reception. I'm this close to refusing the delivery and calling Verizon....I did wanna try out ICS tho.

Some Tegra 3 phones might get my attention this year, maybe some other quad core beasts. I dont wanna waste an upgrade or line on the G Nex. I may still get it and just send it back in 10 days ...

For the record...it wasnt to replace my RAZR, not by a long shot. Wanted to see if they could co exists. But like some folks I value actual phone use over everything else.

Sure, I can upload automatically to my g+ now, but that posts it to my profile, not just my associated picasa account. That's not a solution/alternative IMO, that's working with what you've got, so basically, google is telling us they want to keep data on the hardware or cloud, which is fine, but I would think they would have a better data backup interaction with gdocs before selling phones with no sd capabilities.

I get that sd cards crap out, but looking as a prospective buyer, the halfassed approach to data backup on the nexus is a turnoff to me. I really like the huge dev support for the nexus, but i'm as big fan of data backup (on my pc, I use gdocs and my external drive), so I'll do the same with any phone or tablet I buy.

They are viewable only to you unless you change it.

The reason that Google wants to phase out SD cards is that so many issues you troubleshoot with phones are traceable back to a corrupt or improperly formatted SD cards. Going to all internal storage gets around that. I initially fought it too, but it's inevitable.

lots of nexus bashing around here. i was undecided myself. coming from an evo. which i really like and i miss a lot of features that i miss. but its LTE is the way to go nowadays. thats why i switch and didn't mind paying the early termination fee.

i bought the nexus a week ago, i have 14 days to switch to the razr if i decide to. but living with it for a week. its been ok. its big. my hands are not big so operating with hand is awkward, makes me want to drop it sometimes. but razr is same thing. yea, the razr feels more solid. with the kevlar backing. but unless you plan on abusing it in the middle of the back of the phone. i don't see it as an issue. corners and sides are more vulnerable on all phones. a simple case resolves this issue. i live in the city, so signal has never been an issue.

what was almost a deal breaker and i almost returned the phone. was the fact that my computer didn't recognize it as a mass storage device when i connected it. i didn't want to have to jump to all kinds of hoops to get data (pics, video, music) from computer to phone. but verizon guy showed me simple way. and now it ok. (under development option, click debugging when usb connected, then mtp) then i was able to drag and drop media files with no problems. battery life both phones are terrible. but samsung is worse, so they say. but seidio is currently making a 3800 mah super extended life battery. which is one of the reason i bought the phone. i emailed seidio before i bought the phone. and on their website, it even says its coming soon. both have gorilla glass.

speakers is on the bottom of the phone, if u set it on anything other than a hard surface the speakers get muffled and u won't hear much. so on couch or something soft, i flip it upside down. on table or counter its fine. and with the extra battery, which is gonna add bulk, im sure theres go be extra space for speakers to breathe on soft surface.

i'm gonna go play with razr some more at the verizon store and see how i like it, while i still have a chance to return my nexus. but for now. it does everything i need and then some, and ice cream sandwich is nice.

they're both winners. just depends on your preference/ location for signal, i do like the way the white and black razr look tho.

Nice one, thx for that info. I'm on the fence... For my wife, we're going with the Razr, since she drops her phone often, but I rock a case on all my phones, so for me, it's more about certain options and dev support.

lots of nexus bashing around here.

Just as much RAZR and Rezound bashing from Nexus elitists, trust me.

I think the reason it does not-have mass storage enabled is because like the iPhone they want you to sync files the phone not just copy or move them. If you do a factry data reset on your phone poof your MP3 collection is gone, but if you have it on ypur computer just sync with Touble Twist or something similar andyou are back up and running.

But I think that's part of what separates mac from pc users and iphone from Android users: the ability to have total control of your hardware or have something that's dummy-proof.
Sure, some people with Android phones *should* have iphone because they're technologically ed(my mom is one of them), but that can't be that large of a percentage of users to change the core features of phones/products.

If Google actually thinks syncing apps and phone files is the way of the future without removable media, they had best start lobbying the carriers to offer affordable data allowances higher than 2gb.

You dont need a data connection just just wifi or a data cable (which of course comes with the phone)....

You're missing the point. If Google wants the phones to sync data, rather than use an sd card, that means the phone will use more data, because it's not just going to sync over wifi. The practice, by design, uses more data and I don't see Google subsidizing more data for customer plans; that's my point.
