Declined on trade in because of BS reason that simply isn't true

You don't need to go to accounts in settings to remove them when you go settings to do factory reset it will say remove all accounts proceed with the factory reset . This is the proper way ..
Slightly off topic. When I reset my op7 without deleting accounts it did prompt me to enter Google account when I was setting up. I normally follow the method of deleting accounts manually before reset.

Great. I just came back from dropping off my Note 9 at Fedex. I did not remove my Google and Samsung accounts before factory-resetting. Am I SOL? How much did they dock you for not factory-resetting?

You'll be fine, I didn't remove my Google or Samsung accounts from my Note 9 and my Trade in was accepted. I just did a factory reset, I booted up to be sure it said 'let's go' on start up and that was it.

FRP is standard and has been standard for awhile. It's not BS. You have to remove your account prior to reset and then upon attempting reset it prompts you for your pin so you can reset it. The protection is in place to prevent someone from resetting your phone.

I'm assuming the phone tells you to remove the account for a full reset to happen? I've never used or heard of this feature. If it doesn't clearly tell you what to do for a 'full' factory reset, then wth

Just regular reset ? It ask previous account or just enter a Google account?

It would seem to me that the burden of proof should be on Samsung
It would seem, but it's always been their final decision, even with "this phone has been rooted", "this phone has been modified", "the screen is scratched", "the inside of the phone got wet", etc. And they've been getting worse every year.

@torbach1, "Samsung is a reputable company" They never have been when it comes to repairs or trade-ins. (Remember, your "traded-in phone" becomes landfill in China, so unless it's in factory-new condition, they're going to find that you did something wrong. [And they don't want to do repairs - repairs cost money.] Selling you a new phone at full price makes money.)

I agree , Samsung is kown to do shady things with there trade ins...

I also always turn off the backup data option before I reset. Maybe doesn't matter, but It doesn't hurt.

Are you sure that it's like that on Pixel?

I thought trade ins are done by a third party and I've heard horror stories not just with Samsung.
I don't know who does it , Samsung or 3rd party but nail biter, I only hear from Samsung , maybe others but didn't hear much

I'm sure it sounds like overkill, but I delete all accounts, factory reset, go through setup, then factory reset again. Never a doubt that it's wiped.

Pixel I'm not sure lol , I think so I forget now
Samsung for sure
Not sure if I have to do a video to prove it to some people here lol (I know you believe removing account prior to factory reset is not mandatory)

Even on Pixel it's the same, Settings - Factory reset - prompts device pin/password - profit it removes signed in Google account and all user data

Here is the factory reset screen shot I just took from my pixel 3 XL. It can't be any more clear about removing Google account lol

There have been cases where a reset fails to remove the account and other data. Why that happens, I don't know. If you don't want to take the extra step that's OK.

What's the extra step ? Once you do the settings factory reset go up to the point of entering a Google account if you need to add a Google account your good, if ask for previous then no go..
Then just back out to the welcome screen.
Easy peasy

I'm referring to the extra step of removing the account prior to resetting the device just to be on the safe side. You spend enough time in the Q&A sections to realize some people have issues with FRP removal. Not all of them are stolen devices. In any event here we go again derailing the OP's thread.
