Defective camera on G2 ??

My G2 does everything I want except take decent pictures.
I bought it recently from a private vendor in Toronto. Its an American T-Mobile version. Ofcourse he told me it was brand new and had a full T-Mobile warranty. I just laughed and went along with him.
So, I get the phone home and check to see if its rooted and ofcourse it is. Thats fine for me but the camera is pretty much useless for anything other than bright outdoor shots. Its very frustrating because we recently had a baby and I like to post pics of her.
Is it possible that the camera hardware itself could have been tampered with ?? Or, just the ROM thats currently being run on the device ??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Xcam certainly helps. But the g2 camera isn't as good as current phones.
