Definitely July! [edit]

I'm just curious, I know about all the basic phone stuff and processors. But what's everyone so concerned about this unlockable bootloader for? What's it even mean and how's it affect the phone?

Don't take anything Oxn says seriously. You'll live longer and have to type less. ;) Lately, I sometimes wonder if Oxn isn't a group of people sharing a one user name and password just for the fun of it. I've seen it before.

I wondered the same thing, as some of his posts differ greatly in the way/style/lingo/grammar that they're written. You might be on to something...

This makes me glad I waited for this phone. It is going to be a real beast and unlockable bootloader will get lots of devs on board

Means custom roms and kernals so you dont need to wait for carrier updates. Also underclock/ overclock to help with battery life and sspeed

So wheres that drawn picture Shizero?

I'm about 10 hours into it. Coming along pretty well if I do say so myself, and I don't use the term "well" to describe my works lightly.

Probably won't be ready before the fourth though. Only an hour or so to work on it tonight, then I've got other plans.

Was the "all will be revealed" picture you posted like a month ago, done by you?

I really liked it, and saved it.

Oh and yes they will underclock rather than overclock the processors. So its probably the 4460.

Sent from my Droid

They do but not all the time...

With the Droid X1, we didnt know if it was the 3630 or 3640 back then. They overclocked the 3630 to 1Ghz. Info might have changed since last July, but Motodev has it listed at 3630-1000. Same for the Droid 2 - 3630-1200:

MOTODEV > Products > DROID 2 Global by Motorola, A956

MOTODEV > Products > DROID X by Motorola, MB810

I see the wiki now has it listed as 3630-1000...dont know if the wiki was changed to match that or what. It was different last year.

I did find this. The highest for the 3630 was 720 Mhz at one time. I do remember seeing something like this on the wiki last year:

TI extends OMAP 3 product family *|*Texas Instruments

None of us knew what the exact chip in the Droid X1 was until after Moto updated their dev site. Looking at that last bit of info, why didnt Moto just use the 3640? Some coulda said "the 3640 is just an overclocked 3630 anyway.." if the wiki woulda had all the info from last year still up. Looking at the wiki there is no mention of a 3640 anymore.

So really, like with the Droid X1, we might not really know whats in the Bionic until it actually comes out.

I would think moto would want to go with the higher processor a little underclocked rather than an overclocked processor to save some battery life that LTE will take away.

But nothing would make an impact like having a 1.5 Ghz processor AND superior battery life. Heck, even if they keep the battery life the same, with a processor running that high they are still coming out a little better in the end.

@Oxn: Haha nah, that wasn't mine. Just put the captions in :)

That is true. And moto is usually pretty good with battery life so we will see what they did and how the battery is. I mean if it does indeed have an unlockable bootloader that will leave a lot of options for everyone and also bring a dev following probably greater than the og droid.

I've been following this thread anonymously for awhile, but I wanted to thank the OP for all the info and the members for the great questions.

I think my biggest concern now is whether the Bionic will utilize a 1st gen LTE antenna (that from which I understand is quite large and built primarily for dongles) or a thinner, more form-based 2nd gen antenna.

From the leaked pics, I hope with the enlarged length and width they were able to keep it relatively thin, hopefully .5" or less? Any info on the antenna or depth of the phone would be awesome! Thanks

Yup, having a strong development community is absolute key here. That's what will make this device skyrocket.

Hell, have you seen the Dev community behind the Droid Eris? For such an inconspicuous device to get a CM7 and Gingerbread port before a lot of newer phones is a feat in of itself. I can only hope the Bionic will enjoy something similar.

Most likely 1st gen but if you look at the droid charge it isnt really that thick. From the leaked pics the bionic looks pretty thin for an LTE phone.

I agree, the Charge is a manageable size. I'd prefer to have it thinner than my OG Droid which I think is .51"? I guess I'd like a thinner device, but now that I've learned that a current smartphone owners will have unlimited 4G, I think I rather deal with the 4G thickness and have these blazing fasts speeds.

Thanks for the reply!:)

blazing fast speed yes, but it keeps going in and out

Not consistently fast speeds or are you getting some fringe 4G service by being on the outskirts of their 4G markets?
speeds are consistent. But the conenction drops alot. Many reviewers agree. Watch a phonedog review on the Droid Charge.

Im in the heart of NYC, no outskirt.
