Desktop Software

Nope, it doesn't have to be on the same local network. The service that they use has a FAQ detailing how to use it when not on the local network. Deals with having the exact IP address of your internet connection, and port forwarding on your router. Works pretty well.

Awesome, thanks a lot.

Gotcha. So next question, how is it any different than a general purpose VNC app?

I?ve already got TightVNC running on my basement server for access with my existing laptop, does the ASUS setup require a different server app running to connect to it? Would prefer to keep these parasitic services to a minimum.

Suntan: I had to laugh at "parasitic"....because you're probably right!

Uses a "parasitic" service called Splashtop-Remote (www.splashtopremote.com)

Well, their website looks pretty slick (Splashtop.)

I guess I would be fine replacing VNC with this splashtop and accessing the server with the TF if it worked better.

That said, their website looked a little too good to be true.

Has anyone actually used their TF to access their computer (via LAN or internet) and been able to control it completely the way they show on their website? Including native browsing w/ Netflix/hulu (not plus) playback coming through at a watchable rate?

I use the splashtop app all of the time on my TF while I am away, so I can watch Netflix and Hulu. 3g has a little delay, but 4g and wifi work flawlessly. I have even installed games from Steam while I was away, so they would be ready to play, when I got home.

I haven't used it to much but it seems to work really well.allows you to do everything that you can do on your desktop.

Just for clarity, are you guys talking about this "Splashtop" app or the ASUS flavor of it that comes pre-bundled?

Is the ASUS app capable of doing everything the Splashtop app does?

Also, FWIW the Splashtop app is on sale for $1.99 in the market right now.

I'm not 100% sure if it dies the same but I think so. Think Asus have just bundled it into there software.
