Desktop Version of websites with 3.1 update???

Actually, you can insert a colon in the address bar by doing a long-press on the slash "/" key. When you do a long-press on a key you get the little grayed-out character in the upper right corner of the key. You can also do a SHIFT-"/" to do the same thing.

I see that the keyboard has been "improved" in 3.1 when entering an address-bar text field, with a ".com" key, as well as moving some of the other keys around. Why did they do that? Many of the special characters are in completely different places on the address-bar keyboard compared to the text-entry keyboard. Weird.

Cheers.

I missed this post. How annoying! It's hard enough to figure out where the special characters are, without having them move them around.

FYI, I would highly recommend Dolphin HD to anyone that is annoyed by mobile website redirection using the stock browser. Dolphin will allow you to set the UAString to "Desktop" as a persistent option so you always get directed to the full version of websites. On my Xoom, the Dolphin browser is significantly faster than the stock browser for almost all web content.

Dolphin does have a few minor issues:

  1. The "back" and "top" gesture actions seem to be reversed on the Xoom in landscape mode. (Must be a legacy from the phone version of the software. (I can't get the developers to understand this problem.)
  2. Some web sites will close the browser unexpectedly when autoplay flash windows complete playing content (e.g., see your favorite team site on MLB.com)
  3. Touching the icon on the lower right of the bookmark pane after sliding it out from the left will cause a force close. I don't know what the icon does, because it always crashes the browser. The developers apparently can't understand my description of this issue either, but I've submitted several crash reports.
  4. I don't like the feature of the address bar disappearing from the top of the screen when you scroll down. This is not a bug, but a usability issue.

However, overall the browser is excellent, and I assume the issues above, and perhaps some others, will get worked out over time.

Cheers.
