Dialer/contact manager/messenger

We've had a Nexus 5 for about 6 months, and really like it, but we find the dialer/contact manager to be very none-intuitive, especially compared to my Samsung S3 mini that I have through work. We've just upgraded to marshmallow, and wondering what the best options are? Thanks!
