Hey everyone!!

I'm a current Charge owner who's about to study abroad for 4 months in Paris and I'm lookin' for a phone that I can use while I'm over there.. of course the Charge isn't a Global phone so I'm looking to buy something off contract and use it while away.

I'm also a former DInc owner as well and loved that phone before it broke. Since the DInc2 is global, I was considering buying it off contract and using it while away, but I'm also a newb at this kinda thing so I'm lookin for advice...

If I pick up the 2, should I just go through Verizon's global plans and use it sparingly, or look into getting a local SIM card instead? How does the data work out?? I've heard afew different tricks between toggling GPS and Data off, using WIFI as much as possible, Skype, and even keeping the phone in airplane mode all to help keep usage and bills down. Does anybody know more about this stuff to assist??

Also, as well as the DInc2, I've also considered the same idea with an unlocked iPhone (I heard you could get one off ebay or ect unlocked for about the same $, and they are apparently great for use overseas) or even the Dell Venue Pro (Windows7 phone only $299 new off contract)

If you get a DInc2 you should be fine in Europe for data. However I would suggest you suspend your Verizon account and get a local SIM for your stay.

The International rates are HUGE. Local rates are much better. If you tell Verizon that you are going overseas for an extended period of time they should give you the unlock procedure that will allow you to put other sim's in the device. Then you can set up you Suspension period for a day or two after you arrive. This gives you a chance to get a local SIM before you "deactivate" with VZW.

Good luck and enjoy France!

Buy an unlocked AT&T phone, such as the iPhone 4, off eBay. Then get a local sim card when you land in France. It will not only be a lot better that way, but you'll have a better working phone. AT&T has great agreements with European carriers (O2, Orange, Beeline, etc), while the Dinc2 and Verizon's global phones only work where their financial partner, Vodafone, has coverage. And Vodafone's coverage is hit or miss in Europe. Also, the Dinc2 does not have bands for the most commonly used data frequencies in Europe, while AT&T phones do. In other words, with the Dinc2 you won't be able to web surf or get email.
