Disable GMail App Auto Synch

I have an HTC Sensation 4 and I don't want my phone pulling down my email, at all. How can I turn this synch off once and for all? The only thing I've been able to figure out is to turn off the background data, which I have to then turn back on anytime I want to go to the android market.

If you want to totally disable gmail syncing, go to: menu - settings - accounts and sync - choose your google account - uncheck the gmail sync box
I don't have an htc phone anymore (recently bought an unlocked Galaxy Nexus), but the process should be very simiar.

Alternatively, within the gmail app, press: menu - settings - your google account - under data usage it should tell you whether your gmail sync is on. If it is, touch that and it will bring you to the settings screen above.
