Disable Google now ?

I find Google now really annoying, I don't use it. Is there a way to stop it from starting when up stroking the screen?

open it, menu-->settings-->Google Now-->OFF on top right

That doesn't stop the opening on screen of the app

Actually I think there are some third party launchers you can install that don't have this issue.
