For the folks who paid outright for a new phone after the Note 7 fiasco, good for you. However, there were quite a number of folks who most likely, traded in their perfectly functioning phones and upgraded to the Note 7. Then were forced to turn that phone back in and go into a payment plan for a phone they did not want because they traded in the previous phone that they had in the first place. So to me it seems Like Samsung still left those folks SOL because they have to pay off the replacement phone ( for some more than the $425 Sammy is offering) they never wanted but had to get.
From a monetary view, Samsung still left this group of folks out in the cold. The Carriers (Verizon, in my case) won't let you take advantage of their specific upgrade promos until your current device is paid in full (would be no need for installment plans if everyone could afford to pay upwards of $800 - $1,000 in cash).
My friend is in this predicament because he traded in his S5 at the time for the Note 7, and was forced to purchase S7 edge on a payment plan when the Note 7 went to Hell. He can't justify sending a phone to samsung for $425 off and still have to" finance the remainder due on the Note 8 over 24 month to benefit from this discount", While he will first have to payoff the installment thru Verizon for the S7 edge phone he would have to send to Samsung before hand.
For the poster who made a comment about folks buying phones and entering into EIP knowing something better is coming down the line, seems a bit unfair. In my friend's case, the S5 was his daily phone, so when the Note 7 had to be returned, he "had" to buy another phone. Granted he could have gone to a much cheaper phone than the S7 edge at the time, but why buy and get stuck with any old phone in the hopes Samsung will continue the Note line in the distant future. So many folks were under the impression Samsung and the Carriers were going to offer early upgrades to say the least for previous Note 7 owners, not be told unless they payoff the current phone in full, they're SOL.
I hate to sound as if I think Samsung isn't doing anything at all, but Between Samsung and the individual carriers, they should allow for early upgrade to Note 8. No one is looking to spend even more money for the phone they really want in the first place.
Just my 2 cents.
