Discount for Note 7 owners

Don't think it makes a difference, but why purchase a Verizon Note 8 rather than unlocked you can use with any carrier?
All Verizon phones are also sim unlocked out of the box. But that's not the only reason to buy sim unlocked, it also has a clean firmware without carrier crap and modifications. I know that's personal choice and doesn't bother majority of folks but important to small percent of people.

Wifi calling, HD calling doesn't not always work with unlocked version. I don't think it does with Verizon on the S8.

This is why I went with the Tmobile version to play it safe. With the V20 US unlocked version wifi calling didn't work with tmobile.
May be something to do with LG. WiFi calling, VoLTE all work fine on unlocked US S8, if I remember correctly on Pixel XL and most unlocked phones. T-Mobile is the best carrier for unlocked phones with most features working on them. I think AT&T is the worst where most features don't work on unlocked model.

From an AT&T Customer "You are Correct Sir!" about the AT&T portion anyway.

Except WiFi calling and Verizon Visual Voicemail.

Correct. Usually wifi calling on Samsung unlocked versions work with Tmobile, but I just didn't want to take the chance on the Note 8 and wifi doesn't work this time. I need wifi calling because the room in my house I'm in most of the time doesn't get good reception and the same way where I work. For the same price I just went with the Tmobile version.

True, Tmobile is better for that.

Also, the unlocked version of the V20 on their website under the specs for the unlocked version it does indeed list wifi calling as a feature depending on carrier. It has the feature hidden on the v20 but I found it and switched wifi on but I didn't actually get any wifi calling. Others have tried the same thing.

Chances are unlocked version works with Tmobile but the price this phone cost I didn't want to take a chance, plus Tmobile is fast with updates compared to Samsung.

Is this true? I was all set to get the unlocked version.
This has been the case with non Verizon phones in the past, and most likely here too. I don't use WiFi calling, but I make big use of VZW VVM. If not for that one feature I wouldn't hesitate to get a non-branded phone and kill all the VZW crap I don't want or use.

This has absolutely NOTHING to do with the discount... BUT, I thought it might just give some of you fellow former Note 7 Owners a chuckle! My wife was just digging in one of the kitchen cabinets that we rarely use underneath where my wireless charger sits when she said "Jim, what the hell is this thing?" I walked over and started laughing like hell!

Then I had to explain to her, it was the fireproof charging pouch I ordered after that Guy's Jeep went up in flames down in North Carolina while charging his REPLACEMENT Note 7! Remember that... that was the beginning of the end for us! Anyway, I put it away after they took back my 2nd Note 7 and forgot about it!!!

I want to send in my S5 and take advantage of the deal from Samsung for the Note 7 owners. The phone is in good condition ( no cracked screen and holds a charge) and still works. My only concern is the waterproof usb cover has been removed from the phone because it was broken due to normal wear and tear. Would this cause an issue? I don't want to get screwed because of that.

This would be a deal if:
1. It applied to ALL former N7 owners regardless of going through Samsung or your carrier.

2. If what you owed on your replacement device is forgiven and you start at $0.

3. You are able to upgrade to the N8 immediately.

IMO, anything less isn't a favor from Samsung. It's just good advertising until you get an accurate understanding of the fine print and loopholes they can use to shaft u in the end.

IMO, anything above what Samsung is legally required to do would be a favor from Samsung

I agree on some level. It's nice they tried to keep compensating for their mistake. But on another level I see this as ploy in some sense. As if there's more to it. Idk... I read suspense and I work in criminal law. I'm always suspicious. :-)

True, but we as consumers are also right to expect an honest mea culpa to make up for the hassles they put us through, and continuously put us through with this entire ordeal.

Seriously, when you have people talking about spending $100 or so to buy a phone they wouldn't otherwise have, or having to pay off an existing phone they had little choice but to buy during the recall, to cash in on a special deal that's supposed to be Samsung's apology for kicking them out of the phone they actually wanted in the first place, it's not right in the moral sense.

Most likely they would reject it and give you the $25. Just being honest with the way other devices were judged with the s8 trade in. Then again best Buy gives about $25 for it so if you want trade it in and roll the dice on it. Probably wouldn't get much more anywhere else anyway.

The Note 7 fiasco robbed loyal Note phone users of the phone they really wanted. So yeah, Samsung should make it right for all Note 7 folks to get a Note 8 at Samsung's expense. This BS $425 discount spread over 24 months is a supposed be solely for all note 7 customers, but if you still owe on a phone you had no choice but to buy because Samsung kept the phone you traded in for that Note 7, then you can't even take advantage of this deal. If Samsung were to give all Note 7 folks that $425 as an up front cash payout, then everyone could use that cash as they see fit (pay off a current phone if that is the case) and then they will all have the opportunity, "Again" to return to the Note line and get the newest Note phone, which is what they all wanted in the first place.

Agreed. Not sure why people think Samsung should have zero obligation. They did this in Korea, after all. The US is a major market for them.

marketing ploy at its finest and hey it's working well. :D

I would just buy another cover. It's $5 on Amazon and is not too difficult. There are guides on YouTube. But if you don't feel comfortable doing it, have a phone repair shop do it for you. It might cost a little bit but better than having the trade in denied.

They are giving you something though. I have had plenty of recalls, even on my car, in which they either fixed the item, or provided a full refund, usually the former.

After spending tens of thousands of dollars on a car, i found out that i had to get a recall performed otherwise I would not be able to register my car. I had to take it to the dealer, and they wouldn't give me a loaner car or provide me any compensation for my troubles. Furthermore I had to bring the documentation to the DMV, wasting a few more hours... All with no compensation.

So while i wished that Samsung did more, they are already doing more than other companies that I have had the displeasure of having to deal with recall.

true, so true. And the extra step is for future sales. they don't want to go down as the company that didn't step up and make sure that it never happens again, to their best abilities, and that owners were compensated, though I won't be.

I would like to clarify something I left out of my last post. I would agree Samsung is doing a good job if they offered half off without the need of a trade, if this was indeed purely a gesture of good will. But by alienating those that do not have a phone to trade in (as many are pointing out), they are dropping the ball. At this point, it's no different than any other trade in deal, only with a higher value. Former N7 user with a trade, here's a special deal. Former N7 user with no trade, here's the door.

I'm also disgruntled at Verizon, and other carriers if applicable, for misleading people and changing their terms on trades right as this hit. I've seen a few claims of "You should have done your research" before doing a recall exchange or whatever when turning in the N7. Well I did do the best research I could from the conflicting info put out, got a claim through a Verizon rep saying I could exchange the S7E later, but now seeing their fine print requiring full payoff. So they too should have to step up for their part in this mess.

I already posted a screenshot from that convo with Verizon. I plan to follow up with them when I get the chance, but I feel I'm going to have a fight on my hands. None of this would be near the issue it is now if Samsung and the carriers had a firm, easily accessed plan of action. Even if it was a bad plan, it still would have been something to make an informed decision on.

Well said, I am angry with vzw as well, they told me I can't upgrade until I pay off my s7e completely. I said this wasn't made clear to me at the time of getting into the s7e and they said it wasn't clear to them either and that no one knew how this would work out. What kind of answer is this? So it is clear now that I am stuck paying back a phone I didn't want in the first place. This is a raw deal. What if I requested my original phone back that I traded in to get the note7? What would they have done? That phone was in immaculate working condition as are all my phones. Thinking back thats what I should have done. But knowing vzw they would have sent me a refurbished model of the phone I traded in.
