It all depends on the casing material of the battery as well as the size of the battery. I would not believe it to be a significant detractor to cell signal; however, if you are in areas with very limited signal then the added thickness of the battery/case could be a factor. Before you rule out using this battery, have you performed a factory reset just to clear everything and start fresh with the new battery? Backup/sync your data before hand and be sure to give it a day or two worth of use before making a final decision.

I feel the thickness of your new battery is blocking the signal. It must be covering up the antenna and mostly because of the thickness or maybe the material used in the battery is also affecting your signal strength.
