Do I need a case and/or Screen protector for my NEW MAXX?

On my HTC Thunderbolt, I started with the Verizon protectors. I instantly disliked them - they are fingerprint magnets and I could not keep them clean, they always seemed cloudy. I went with Zagg because (1) I could pick it up at retail, and (2) the retailer matched Zagg's on-line MSRP (they had it priced $5.00 more for some reason). The Zagg feels different under the fingers; to me it's a "better" feel , but that is VERY subjective. YMMV.

I have applied and used Zagg on my kid's iPod 4 and on my work iPhone. Back when I carried a Blackberry, my employer supplied an Otterbox, and so I have just been used to screen protectors for a long time. I have had no issues with the wet application on any device; other than the Thunderbolt, none have removable batteries. In addition to the instructions, I apply them with the phone on a "bed" of paper towels to help catch the liquid when you squeegee it out.

When I first got the Maxx, Zagg didn't have a screen protector yet, and I had also recently acquired a Sero 7 Tablet and a touch-screen laptop. Skinomi had protectors for all three available. I have found that the "cure time" is longer as the screens get larger. I applied the Maxx Skinomi at bed-time and the phone was usable the next morning, but it still took a little time for the initial "micro cloud" - the screen looks pixelated - to clear up. Probably about 24 hours.

It took about 48 hours to clear up on the tablet, and about 72 on the computer, thought there was a small spot that took longer. The one on the computer seems to be MUCH more of a dust magnet than the other two. Don't know why.

Having used both Zagg and Skinomi, I would say they are comparable products, with comparable warranty policies, though I am sure the two companies would disagree.
Thanks for your post. Because of comments you and others have made I am currently leaning toward the Skinomi. How long have you been using it? Is there anything about it you don't like?

I agree...Zagg and Skinomi are comparable products. I think the Skinomi is easier to put on and a little clearer. What made my decision is a Zagg is $15-$30 depending on where you get it and a Skinomi can be had on Amazon from between $2 and $8. Big savings there for a slightly better product.

Now the Skinomi is available at 60% off if you buy direct from their website & enter code endofthe2013. It's free shipping too.

How long have you been using the Skinomi? They currently have a 60% off coupon.

I bought mine on September 9, and received it from Amazon on Sept 13. I like it enough that I bought one for my iPad. I've tried a few Zaggs on my iPad and they have all clouded over time. The Skinomi is still great two plus months later.

I cannot stand cases but cannot go without a screen protector...so you can guess my opinion

I have had the Skinomi since I've had the phone (end of September). I ordered the Skinomi as soon as I knew I was getting the phone. For that price, it is worth buying even if you wind up not liking it.

I would like to thank everyone who has replied to this thread. For those of you who are interested I decided to go with the Speck Candy Shell Grip case and I just placed my order for a Skinomi screen protector. Skinomi replied to a question I sent them about the installation in about 24 hrs. They said no water should squeegee out, only air. And at $4.78 it was a no brain er. For anyone who wants to purchase one at that price you will need coupon code endofthe2013 and I'm guessing that it will only be good for 1 more day. Happy New Year! :)

How long have you been using the Skinomi? If I purchase before Jan. 1 I can save 60%!

I just started using Skinomi. I was die hard Zagg up until now and am very happy I made the switch. Put my first skinomi on 3 days ago.

Having just installed it on my maxx 3 days ago, and doing my iPad tonight, I can say that if you do it right liquid will squeegee out but that is not a problem at all. If you simply squeegee away from the speaker opening at the top you will be perfectly fine.

Between Zagg and now Skinomi I have been using wet application screen protectors for 3+ years and never damaged a phone with the application liquid.

OK. Thanks for the info. I'll be careful.

I have been using the Skinomi protector with the Diztronic TPU Case for a while now. I recently took the Skinomi off because it was curling near the left edge and capturing dirt under it. I think it should be a bit smaller to accommodate for cases. I am going with a nude face plus a case for the time being. The screen is beautiful without any screen cover.

Does anyone with the speck candyshell grip case have a problem with getting it in and out of your pocket?

I don't keep mine in a pocket. Instead I use a small camera case clipped to my waist band with another clip on my belt loop for security. Much safer than keeping it in a pocket, & very easy to remove and replace. There is even a small secondary pocket that could hold a backup power source.

Can the Skinomi be cleaned off and put back on? Will Skinomi replace it under those circumstances? I'm thinking of trimming mine just a hair on the sides to prevent that from happening. Hopefully I won't have a problem if I'm careful putting my case on after installing the protector, and I don't have to remove it again.

I am nearly 100% sure that neither Zagg nor Skinomi will not provide warranty if you trim the protector, even if they did warrant removing it. As far as I know, no, you cannot remove and reinstall. As far as I can tell from my experience, you will not have to remove it to clean it. The front facing side is the only thing that needs to be cleaned, and you will have to clean it a lot less than bare glass.

If you want a case-friendly wet-apply protector, then I would get the Zagg, which has that option. Motorola Droid Maxx Screen Protector | ZAGG (Notice the case-friendly choice size.)

I'm pretty sure that you are right about voiding the warranty if I trim the protector. At under $5 I'm not too worried about that. I just want to be sure that the protector won't start to curl at the edges. I put a temporary protector on my screen and after taking my Speck case off a few times it started pulling up at the edge. Now about 20% is flopping in the breeze. I guess I could just install the Skinomi as is and if it starts to curl order the Zagg cut for a case.

I would cut it. I wish I did. Skinomi told me I could remove it, clean it, then reinstall but I don't think it would work. They are great about sending replacements if you have trouble installing.

Sent from my Maxx.

Has anyone used the Griffin Reveal Case for the Droid Maxx?

Yes. It's not bad. The plastic back scratches. The sides are good and, though the buttons are covered, they are easily operated.

I still use it once in a while, but my favorite case remains the bumper case. The back is open, and the back of the phone does not really need protecting. The griffin reveal is a bit slick if you lay the phone down on its back, so you have to be careful on a non-level surface. Otherwise, though, I like the Griffin.

They might be good about sending replacements, but will they replace it if it has been cut?

I am not sure. However, I received my replacement without any questions asked. I told them I had problems with the install, and they sent me another. That being said, I never actually cut mine so I am not sure how they would have reacted to that.
