I have rooted my Nexus 7 and installed Smoothrom v5.1. ADB is recognized & working however Fastboot is not recognized using when running the driver test from Nexus Root Toolkit. However booting into bootloader Nexus always indicates Fastboot mode. So finally to my question, do I really need fastboot? What's it good for? I think I remember when I initially rooted the thing it would say bootloader mode but not now. I'll take any advice I can get i am reaching my frustration limit.

Fastboot is used when you want to flash/restore the factory images back to the device. It is also used to unlock/lock the device.
But seeing how your using the Toolkit its obviously working even though its showing as not recognized.
