Do not drop the samsung s8

Glass may or may not be a dumb idea, but the fact is, this is the popular build for phones right now. So, if you buy one, don't drop it.

It's like carrying a baby. Sure accidents happen, but when you're carrying something vulnerable, accidents simply can't happen...or else.

Gorilla glass is good, but it is glass. It has a survival rate of 80% from a shoulder height drop. That means that conversely it will crack one in five shoulder height drops statistically

"Introducing Corning Gorilla Glass 5, a new glass solution that raises the bar for protection against drops higher than ever, surviving 1.6-meter, shoulder-height drops onto hard, rough surfaces up to 80% of the time. That’s up to 4X better in drop failure height than competitive glasses,"

And this is why we use cases. I've dropped mine several times but the Otterbox Defender has kept it well protected

As a Verizon rep, I can tell you a bunch of people broke them within weeks of ownership. People came in with beat up looking S3, S4, S5 phones not in a case and left the store with no case. We recommended it, they figured we are just trying to be greedy and make commission.

Needless to say a few people dropped and broke them on day one. Had a few people come yell at us for selling them a fragile phone, and a few who wanted to exchange it but we couldn't because they cracked the back. One guy got an S6 Edge and didn't want to invest in a case because he wasn't sure if he would like the curved screen, was back 3 days later wanting to exchange for the regular S6 but the back of his phone was cracked.

Our Note 7 display was broken the first month it was on display, it got dropped on the counter, fell like 2ft lol. Coworkers S6 Edge plus broke while in one of Samsungs slim cases falling from a conference table to a carpeted floor. These are the most fragile phones ever and now Lg, HTC, Motorola, and even Apple are making glass backs.

The guy who didn't want the case because he wasn't sure he was keeping the phone could have returned the case.

WHAT... I thought I was suppose to drop my phone once a week... WHY didn't someone tell me I was not suppose to drop my phone?

Sorry about your phone but damn, that was from ONE drop? I had several cases for mine before I even got it, and five weeks in, I haven't dropped it once. Cost me too much money, and parents who buy their kids this phone is asking for trouble, because typically they just don't care. Hell, the average adult doesn't care , until they drop and crack the phone..then it's the PHONES fault. smh...

No offense but I purchased my case about a half week prior to the phone coming out. I knew the phone was going to be fragile after seeing photos and checking it out at Best Buy before its release. Why I was so proactive was, I rocked my S6 for almost a year without a case. Was moving things out of my storage center and dropped my phone. Nice crack diagonal across the front of the display. Wasn't going to take a chance with this phone. Sorry to hear this happened but hopefully you were able to get a replacement.

This is exactly why I will NEVER buy a phone with curved edges like the Samsung(s). They are just too fragile and the edges are useless. What is the point of having curved glass and on the back also when you have to cover it it in thick rubber??? Samsung...are you listening???? Time for all OEM's to get back to practical basics and build these things better. Of course those who make the cases like it that these expensive toys are so fragile...keeps them in business.

Bought the Samsung S8 and unfortunately dropped it the first day and it shattered like glass. I cannot believe Samsung is doing this to us. The screen is gorilla glass which is great then they have the nerve to charge 600-800+ for a phone made of something so fragile. Where I bought it they did not have a case for it. I say buy a case first then the phone.

I don't want to rub it in, I totally get your frustration! I returned a phone because there was a small scratch on the bottom back that you could see just in a certain angle! I know how crazy this sounds but when you buy something so expensive you want it to be perfect (and rightfully so).

That being said, it's glass hence it shattering like glass. Samsung isn't really to blame here as it never claimed it was solid and shatterproof. And I'm certainly not saying you are to blame either. Those things are portable and therefore proned to be dropped. And I'm really really feeling for you!

When I got my S7 I left it in the box until my case arrived. That's how scared I was of it breaking. In that respect, the last part of your message is the most important: never use it without a case.

So kids: Never use it without a case!

And word has it Apple is going back to an all glass design to facilitate wireless charging.... Between the G6, Galaxy series and what looks to be next iPhones ( as well as some previous ones...) Looks like all the top tier options will be all Glass...

Seriously hope they don't. Wireless can be done with both metal and plastic backs as well, and both metal and plastic are better than glass for durability for obvious reasons. https://www.qualcomm.com/news/relea...mpany-enable-wireless-charging-mobile-devices

My 13 yr old son dropped his S8 on like day 3. Cracked with a case and screen protector on it. Accidents happen and insurance replaced it.

Unless they have a job to pay for it themselves my kids will never have a top end premium phone unless it's my 2 year old hand me down.

Any device can break when dropped it all depends on what it drops on and how it hits all you can do is hope for the best and use a case and screen protection.

Bottom line is, this is what ppl asked for and it is outselling all previous models so I think as long as that's the case, it will continue.

Don't see why a kid needs a high end phone and made of glass also. But I digress, sometimes I wonder if easily shattered phones are purposely made that way as another revenue source for the likes of Samsung and others.

Shattered like the material it is made out of?

Always use a case or be prepared for situations like this. I just bought an amazing Incipio case from my local Verizon store.
