Do you prefer instant messaging or texting?

I tend to texting, more traditional way, with older people. And instant messaging with younger ones.
Lol. Are you serious. That is your answer. You know there is no difference between the two. Your answer made me smile. Thank you !

Whatsapp to chat with my family, and BBM to chat with friends.

That's a tough one actually. But I've noticed the older I get and less friends I tend to associate myself with. I prefer texting. Instant messaging usually gives to many people access to me. Like on FB I always keeps my instant messenger logged out. Can't say the same for hangouts but I don't have friends on there so I guess that doesn't count, but it's the application I use for texting.

My work revolves around using IM such as Whatsapp so I have grown to like IM a lot more than texting. There are many benefits to using IM such as quick and fast texting, group chats, rich media attachments, and read/unread receipts. Now 99% of my messages are through IM and not text messages. Most people using Facebook messenger/Whatsapp/Viber/Tango now a days so it's not hard to find someone that only strictly texts through the client. Also it lags when I use the stock messenger because I type pretty fast and when an incoming text is appearing while I'm writing a message then the animation will lag terribly.

Barely text now unless the network is not good. Instant messaging is more convenient and flexible for communication as you can send more than plain texts.

Texting. Universal in use and really available.

IM person here. Mostly because most all of the real-time messaging I do comes in Hangouts or Slack. Both are much more platform agnostic than SMS is..... and I can seemlessly move from my phone to my laptop without having to deal with go-between apps like PushBullet or MightyText. And it's little things... like getting convos from my kids, who don't have access to SMS devices.

For personal, I prefer Texting when it is just a short solid statement or answer. If it starts to turn into a conversation, I prefer IM because it is quicker. And then if IM conversation turns into a more serious matter or emotional (family members), then I call them.

For work, I prefer IM because it tells me if they are there and active. So I can ask a quick question and get an immediate response.

Funny thing is, I can't get my friends and family to do anything but Text and they don't want to IM. At work it is reversed and I can't get anyone to Text, only IM.

I am now actually more of IM-based, particularly Facebook Messenger, I use it to have leisurely talks with my family and friends but for professional communications, it is always text since it has to be in black and white (also emails). I actually really wish my WhatsApp-based friends would just move to FB Messenger, though one thing I would want to be implemented in this app is the "buzz" feature like the one in Yahoo! Messenger, hahaha

I use both, it just depends on who I'm talking to. I'm either using Hangouts(I use a google voice number) or facebook messenger.

This is almost irrelevant to this conversation, but I also miss MSN Messenger! I think the best messaging platform I've ever used on mobile is BBM, but there are some great alternatives, like Facebook Messenger. I've heard good things about Hangouts and iMessage; though I have yet to try an iPhone so I cannot speak from an empirical, hands-on standpoint. ;)

I was a huge MSN messenger user back in the day, it was amazing. Seeing 20 or so of your friends online at once, their statuses, what they were listening to at that moment. You just can't get that level of connection and interaction on mobile these days.

Anyway, I use WhatsApp, because sending picture over MMS is garbage. Rarely use SMS unless absolutely necessary.

I agree! Those were the days where you really only used one platform for instant messaging/messaging of any kind (other than Yahoo! Messenger, of course); and so you'd absolutely get that level of mass integration and you could almost "communicate" with someone (ie, like what you were saying about seeing their statuses and what they were listening to) without even talking to them. I really miss that, but it's so hard now to find a messaging app/platform that EVERYBODY uses. Lots use Facebook Messenger, it's true, but there are so many other alternatives that it's so hard to get everyone on board.

Hangouts is the best of both worlds as long as you have Google voice number as you can both text and instant message using Google account.
