Do you think tablets will kill smartphones?

So currently it seems like every phone geek is in smartphone heaven. Tons of them coming out and they are getting faster and faster and more and more capable. On the other hand, you get the ipad, the Galaxy tab, the BB Playbook, and who knows how many more other tablets are coming out. Will this kill off the smartphone eventually? Will they throw all their resources at the tablet market and forget about our smartphones? I am a one person device man, I want to do everything on my phone and would hate having to lug a tablet with me.

Thoughts?

You just answered your own question. No, because people will not be tugging around a big tablet everywhere they go unlike a phone which is small and light weight and easy to pocket. Besides not many will currently have a need for one when you have a smart phone.

A lot of these tablets with smartphone OS's are limited, but I see them as substitutes/compliments for their laptops and netbooks for basic usage. Tablets like the HP Slate will really make things interesting with the increased functionality.

Tablets won't kill smartphones because you can't bring a tablet everywhere, but you can bring your smartphone everywhere. Also tablets are generally more expensive so not as many people can afford it compared to a smartphone. But it might become really popular for people who don't have smartphones or don't like them.

I've been burned on tablets because of Apple. When the iPad was announced, I was expecting Mac OS X in a tablet format, with all of the OS X interface power behind it. Apple hyped the **** out of this thing (not directly, of course, but by stirring up the rumor mills themselves) and made everyone believe it was going to be the new standard for tablet PCs.

What we got was an iPod with a magnifying glass.

The worst part? It's the new standard for tablet PCs. Smart phones with magnifying glasses.

iPad and other "tabs" (ugh) have all but killed off the netbook market for the general non-geek consumer. Geeks and techies may still prefer physical keyboards, but netbooks will eventually (I'm talking a few more fiscal quarters) become a thing of the past to everyone else, because iTab ripoffs will be "in."

IMO, the new-generation tablets are the worst thing that could happen to mobile computing; they've lowered the standard for what people should expect out of their portable devices. If I'm going to carry around a tablet PC that's the same size as a regular laptop (12" or so), I expect it to be able to do everything the laptop can, with a real desktop OS running on it. I don't want my laptop to be in the same performance class as my smart phone. I love the Android OS, I love webOS, and I'm impressed with what smart phones are capable of nowadays. I like carrying that kind of power in a compact form that can fit in my pocket, as stated above. But the idea of being limited to smart phone functions on a device as big as a laptop? That's just shameful to me.

To be honest, I'm a huge Android fan, and I used to be a huge WebOS fan, and I've never been interested in tablets from either OS. I just don't see a real point in them. They're expensive and unnecessary to me, I'd rather just get a good phone.

Tablets are nice and portable but would you carry a tablet around everywhere you go or your phone? Ithink tablets will become as popular as laptops but wont overtake laptops.

I don't think that will ever happen. They serve too different purpose

If my Tab could make calls my Droid x would be on Craigslist.

Well I can't say they won't. My friend had a Storm 2 and used it for internet, e-mail,etc.............. Then she got an iPad and got rid of her smartphone and traded it in for a prepaid phone. All she uses her phone for is calling and texting. So basically she replaced her smartphone with a tablet. If the iPad could call the phone would be gone!

Thats not say much lol. Storm 9550 is not even a smartphone. It's pretty much a phone with email. lol.

But anyways, that might be fine for her since she can put that in her purse or something but ipad won't fit in my pocket.

The thought has crossed my mind but I can't see carriers and companies wanting to lose out on the smartphone business. They generate too much money in sales. They will find a way to always have both around.

Smarts generate probably more then half of carriers earnings. These numbers are no where near true but for an example.

1 million uses on VZW are smartphone users times $30/phone. That's roughly $30million right there. But we are not sure of operating cost for VZW.

No, I don't think a tablet will impede on smartphone sales. I think they are more likely to get rid of netbook sales though. They are becoming increasingly more powerful.

Getting visions of people holding tablets up to their ears...

Remember when people used to carry mammoth boom boxes on their shoulder?

I'm sure people who use Skype and other voice apps might find ways to utilize tablets, but I don't see them replacing smart phones...

Tablet does have better battery life over netbook as well as boot time and if your just using it for the internet, then a tablet is fine. Something I thought about but then looking at some of the price of netbook and the new processors, might say screw it to the tablets and get a netbook for on the go.

Whatever happened to the glasses with virtual monitors we are all supposed to be using? I never even got to try one.

I would like to see more improvements to run large displays from a smartphone. Perhaps wireless methods, or just more devices with HDMI output and display mirroring.

Regarding tablets, it's getting harder to ignore them since there are so many sub $200 models out there. However I use the crap out of my old netbook and there isn't a single thing I could move over to a tablet because I run specialized apps.
