Does Google Photos Back up without setting up

Hi,

I have the google photos app on my phone but have never opened it. My phone is logged in to google but I have never opened the google photos app and I’m just wondering if the google photos app automatically starts backing up your photos as soon as your phone is set up or would I need to set up google photos before it would start backing up my photos?

Also is the google photos app set to automatically back up your photos by default? Or do you have to manually back them up by default?

No, I'm pretty sure you have to opt in. When Google Photos is first started, it will ask you if you want to turn on the backup function. You can easily tell if your photos are being backed up by going to photos.google.com on your computer browser and seeing if any of the photos you took on your phone are there.
