You realize it was essentially a last minute decision right? They were hoping the embedded FPS tech would be ready. It kind of makes you wonder how half of the design team didn't profess that it was a bad idea.

Read the article posted above. But surely they had at least some say where it went didn't they? Perhaps somewhere besides the worst spot on the phone?

Last minute decision meant placing it wherever it could fit without any redesign on internals. I doubt under the camera was an option.Yes, I read it. It still doesn't say why they put it RIGHT THERE. I know, last minute and all. I'm certainly no electronics expert and have no idea what goes on where inside the phone that may have precluded them from putting it in a more logical spot.
I don't think that's an option for Samsung pay, is it? maybe I'm wrong

The way most phones are designed were for right handed people using their left hand to hold their phone. On phablets, (such as LG V20, Note 4 & 5), the volume rocker is on the LEFT side, and you use your left thumb to adjust the volume. Using your right hand to hold a phone looks and feels awkward
It may had been limited by how far along they were in the design phase.

I'm going to assume they had no other choice in placement , however still awful. Too bad so many things are market driven. It might be more tolerable on the S8 but not good with tiny hands.
That's exactly meThat's what I've always thought also but apparently there are people that hold it in their right hand and do everything one handed, I guess moving things around on the phone with their thumb
One of the things that seemed odd though is that I really had to contort my index finger to get to the scanner. Being right handed and holding the phone with my left hand my index finger just naturally lies across the back of the phone easily reaching the spot where the camera flash is. It seems like it would have made more sense to put the FPS over there.
