Does it seem like the fingerprint scanner is on the wrong side?

It kind of makes you wonder how half of the design team didn't profess that it was a bad idea.

You realize it was essentially a last minute decision right? They were hoping the embedded FPS tech would be ready.

But surely they had at least some say where it went didn't they? Perhaps somewhere besides the worst spot on the phone?

Read the article posted above.

Yes, I read it. It still doesn't say why they put it RIGHT THERE. I know, last minute and all. I'm certainly no electronics expert and have no idea what goes on where inside the phone that may have precluded them from putting it in a more logical spot.

The upside is that I almost never have to use it as I have the smart unlock set. So if I have my watch on, etc it will stay unlocked. So overall, it probably shouldn't be a huge deal for the most part.

Last minute decision meant placing it wherever it could fit without any redesign on internals. I doubt under the camera was an option.

I'll assume not. It will be interesting to see what they've "fixed" by the time the Note8 comes out. Boy I hope I don't want it...

Although I don't like the location of the FPS, I think I'll be ok because I use the HR & Sp02 sensor on the S7e which is located on the same spot. I just have get used to the health sensors being on the opposite side.

It may had been limited by how far along they were in the design phase. It's possible it was the only place they had room to place it without having to redesign too many other parts, which could cause serious delays. Perhaps (and this is purely speculation) they dropped a dual camera feature to implement theFPS. Who knows.

I'm not sure it will be a big deal for me. I use a lot of smart unlock features. Namely with my gear S3. But I also do it with my car and motorcycle headset Bluetooth connections. I've find I don't need to use my fingerprint too often on my S7.

The way most phones are designed were for right handed people using their left hand to hold their phone. On phablets, (such as LG V20, Note 4 & 5), the volume rocker is on the LEFT side, and you use your left thumb to adjust the volume. Using your right hand to hold a phone looks and feels awkward.

Also, everything in East Asia is opposite: people drive with the steering wheel on the right side, read books from right to left, and Samsung in particular has the back button located on the right instead of left like most Android phones. Maybe that explains why.

That's what I've always thought also but apparently there are people that hold it in their right hand and do everything one handed, I guess moving things around on the phone with their thumb

This. What's in that location on the S7? The heartbeat sensor. They probably wanted to continue to use that in the 8, but then Synaptics couldn't get the tech working right.

If they wanted a more traditional rear placement, think about the design charges they would have needed to implement... They would have had to run some sort of wiring harness over the battery to the where the sensor would be located... Then they would have had to tell the Corning to scrap the solid back glass panel and punch a hole in it, which then requires you to add in seals to retain it's IP68 rating. And between the seals and the sensor and it's connections, it might add thickness to the device, which would mean a sight redesign to accommodate that.

So rather than do all that mess at the end of the project, which would almost assuredly cause a delay and a massive amount of embarrassing press (note 7 much?), They just yanked the heartbeat sensor and stuffed the FPS in that hole.

I'm going to assume they had no other choice in placement , however still awful. Too bad so many things are market driven. It might be more tolerable on the S8 but not good with tiny hands.

I know some United States presidents who probably wouldn't like the S8 then.

Like the prototype, they should've rotated the whole setup 90 degrees, flash on top, camera in middle, fingerprint sensor underneath.

One of the things that seemed odd though is that I really had to contort my index finger to get to the scanner. Being right handed and holding the phone with my left hand my index finger just naturally lies across the back of the phone easily reaching the spot where the camera flash is. It seems like it would have made more sense to put the FPS over there.

I personally would have liked the scanner to be below the phone like it is on the Google Pixel. This would make it easy to access for everyone. Even if they are Left or Right handed 😃

But if I had to choose a side, I would probably leave it on the side it is currently. As other's have sand, there are more right handed people.
