Does Verizon care if you buy phones at $300/$400 off and pay off device payment plan to frequently?

Ok. Making sure I have everything correct. Get one of those phones at Best Buy, go to Verizon store, get LG G4 with new line. Get $300 credit for old phone, $100 credit. Submit to lg $200 credit. I can then swap SIM card to new phone that I really want it for. Then cancel new line and pay balance of phone cost. Correct?

How long do I have to wait before I can cancel the line?

to be 100% sure, wait until the $300 trade-in credit AND the $200 LG rebate Visa card have arrived.

Better yet, make sure the $300 trade-in has been "spent" as in applied to your Verizon bill.... as for the $200, make sure it's been spent down to $0 balances(on booze, pay-per-view porn, or legal brothels, whatever you fancy.... :) )

or just cancel the line and use the $300+$200 to pay off whatever the remaining Device Payment Plan balance is. (that's what I did with the Note 5's $400 off)

while you're waiting just put a dumbphone on that line and you can avoid the $30 data plan. (only if your plan requires it) that way you only have to pay $9.99/month access fee.(again, depends on your particular plan)

It also caused my local Best Buy store to ask why I needed to buy 16 $7 to $9.99 prepaid Verizon smartphones. (all traded to Verizon because of their $200, $300 or $400 trade in deals)

I'm going to have to try this. Thanks for the tip!

Do you at least take them out of the package and start them up before you turn them in? ;)

1.) Open a new line and order a G4 (regular price of $552.00)
2.) Verizon currently has a $100 sale by using "LGG4SAVE"
3.) Trade in a smartphone for $300 off purchase price
4.) This brings your final cost to $152.00 which you do a device payment. Therefore, you only pay taxes out the door.
5.) Then you fill out a LG rebate form (Life's Good) and get $200 back
6.) Cancel the new line and you walk out with a new G4 and around $48 in your pocket (give or take depending on a few other factors).

If I follow you correctly it appears to me that you can do this in store and get the LGG4SAVE promo and the $300 rebate applied immediately. I'm also curious as to how long people have waited for the LG $200 rebate. You'd be paying for the plan in the meanwhile.

I have a single line UDP plan. Would I be better off opening a completely new account to do this? I hate to mess with my UDP line.

yes, I took them out. I remove the protective plastic on the screen and install the batteries. Most of those prepaid smartphones come with chargers ans USB cables. Verizon doesn't want them.

If you can't find the really cheap prepaid smartphones at Best Buy, try Walmart. Don't spend more than $9.99.

I don't have a dumb phone around any more. Any suggestions for a cheap one that will work on Verizon?
Thanks again for all the help!

I was about to suggest eBay, but after a quick search, I didn't find any that would work for under $20.(spending more to save $30 data plan fee didnt' seem worth it) :( What you want is a dumb/basic phone that can be used for POSTPAID Verizon with good ESN(obviously). Perhaps your local Craigslit or even pawn shop? Just make sure you can activate it on your Verizon acct before you pay the guy.

The cheapest I found on eBay was $29.98 + $3.99 shipping from a very reputable seller. (note: this is not an endorsement, as I've never bought anything from him/her) :)

It's always a good idea to keep a Verizon basic phone around for situations like this. (to get around the data plan fee, if you still have an older plan)

Does it need to be a Verizon smartphone? I couldn't find requirements listed anywhere. I have a very old AT&T Samsung Windows Mobile device that still works.

I honestly don't know. If you start a new order and select Device Payment Play, it will take you to the trade-in page. See if it accept that phone and change the $0 trade-in value to $300.

Just want to add this.... it won't help you right now,
but it's good to keep this in mind for next time. :)

You can buy any Verizon prepaid basic phone and put it
on your postpaid account AFTER 6 months.

For example, the Verizon Samsung Gusto 3 frequently
goes on sale at Best Buy for as little as $10. Take it
home, open the box, put the battery in. Call the Verizon
number and activate the phone. It will assign you a new
number based on the zip code you entered. Here's the
important part, you do NOT have to add any money to the
prepaid phone. You have already activated it. Well, you
can choose to and money if you do intend to use the phone.

Or do what I've done many times. Put the activated prepaid
phone in the closet. Set a reminder and take the phone out
after 180 days. At that point, the prepaid Gusto 3 can be
put on any Verizon postpaid account. The phone is marked
as prepaid, so anytime you want to put it on your postpaid,
you'll have to call Verizon and have the rep manually do it
for you. Since it's been 180 days, you won't have any
problems. Be sure to tell the rep that you also wan to put
a data block on the Gusto 3, so you wont' be billed for data.

How long do I have to wait before I can cancel the line?

It depends on whether you do this promotion online or in-store. If you do it in-store so that the $300 trade-in and the $100 discount is applied immediately, you can cancel the line the next day. If you do everything online, then wait until you get the $300 credit from Verizon.

Doing this in-store is the best bang for your buck because both the $300 and $100 savings can be applied to the purchase price of the phone. If you do it online, you only get the $100 savings applied immediately and have to wait for the $300 gift card. I strongly recommend doing this plan in-store because you can cancel the new line the next day. If you do it online, I would keep the line active (I'm not if suspending it would work) until you receive the $300 from Verizon.

As for the plan, you need to open a new line in order to do this as it does not apply to upgrades.

It doesn't need to be a Verizon phone to work; though, badkitties is right. Test it online and you should see the $300 when you do a trade-in value.

Just want to add that once the online trade-in estimator shows $300, print that page out and bring it to the Verizon store. :) Better yet, go to the last page just before submit order and print it. That will show $300 trade-in with the phone's IMEI on it, as well as the $100-off. Saves a lot of trouble at the store. Some Verizon corporate store will act stupid(as if that's hard to do) and say "sorry, this phone doesn't qualify" or some BS like that. With a printed page in hand, they will usually shut up and take it. :)

There's no way that Verizon can make use of the $10 prepaid smartphone or any other old phone with no value.. they should just skip this step and hand over the $300. :D Although I guess Verizon can at least make sure that the phone gets recycled properly. (probably sent by the thousands to China or India where environment standards are non-existent and recycling places pollute the local waters  )

Speaking of recycling... I was at my local scrap metal junkyard last week. I was giving them my two bent 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels.(unrepairable) I received $51 based on the weight of the wheels. Just for fun, I asked the guy what they give for recycling my phone. The guy put it on the scale and entered "used cell phone" on the computer. It came back as -0.07, which means I had to pay them 7 cents to recycle it!!!
