If I get a finger within about 3mm of the screen it'll launch whatever icon is closest or bring up the menu for touching a blank area if my finger is not at least pretty close to an icon. Many times when I set the phone down it'll launch something that has an icon near the left or right edges even though I'm not actually touching the screen.

Could be my buildup of static electricity. I'm almost always able to zap anyone, any time. I just charge up while doing anything or even sitting still. It's real bad on dry winter days. Some zaps feel like I got a jolt from a live 110 volt socket. =)

Any way to tone down the screen sensitivity so it won't do anything unless I'm actually *touching* the touchy thing?

LOL! Wow, where do you live? Is it still cold there? Do you have really long hair? Do you wear clothing like thick, heavy sweaters? I'm just really curious. I've never heard of such a thing.

I work on computers a lot, so I know that before going into a computer, either use an anti-static wrist strap or touch some bare metal. If static electricity keeps building up on you that quickly though, you're going to get tired of having to touch metal all the time. Soooo, keep a screwdriver in your pocket.

Jk. But yeah, I know of no such way to turn the screen sensitivity down like that. It honestly wouldn't matter because as long as you have those super electrified fingertips, it's going to still find a way to activate the screen. The only thing you can change is your conductivity. Wear natural fiber clothes, keeping your hair short or pulled back, wearing rubber soled shoes, that sort of thing. And dare I say, use anti-static matting around your whole house.

I know what you mean, sometimes after typing I might keep my fingers close to the screen without touching and I can open an app or type a letter without touching it.

Really warm fingers seems to make that happen also - it must be a combo of "extra" heat of some fingers besides the electrical path - but a screen protector should help cut down on the sensitivity problem you are having.

I gave my wife my old Samsung Moment that works perfect (no I wasn't trying to be cruel to her) and I had to take the screen protector off because she has really cold fingers and could barely make the bottom capcitive buttons work - took off the screen protector and everything is fine.

The screen protector was the thinness at the time and I used many different types over the years - and I think they ALL reduce sensitivity somewhat even on old style resistive screens like the PalmOS Treos.
