Has anyone else tried double tapping on their phone screen and seeing it wake up? I have been trying it and it works for me. Could it be a glitch or has Google possibly woken it up on the backside?
Anybody else seeing results?

You know, when I got it a few days ago I thought it did this, I wasn't trying to but it seemed to work. Tried it now several times after reading this post, it hasn't worked .

No luck here.

There's a mod to enable this on XDA that seemingly doesn't require root (if I understand it right). I'm not too keen on doing it though since it breaks OTA updating.

It's only the Nexus 9 from the new devices that had that feature.

I've been kind of thinking though that there's some kind of proximity feature for turning on the ambient display though. There's times I could swear I pull it out of my pocket or pick it up from my desk and that part turns on. No notifications being present to have activated it or me pressing the power button.

With Ambient Display turned on, all you need to do to wake the phone is lift it up or move it around a bit. Perhaps your "double tapping" was enough to initiate the wake up process.

As to why it no longer works, did you have a screen lock (pin, pattern, etc) in place before and no longer? Ambient Display is disabled unless some form of screen lock is enabled and active.
