Downgrade from 2.17.651.5 to 2.08.651.2 with locked hboot 1.5?

Ok I was trying to unlock the bootloader on my replacement EVO 3D with hboot 1.5 using the htcdev.com method. When I try to unlock I get stuck after step 12 in the instructions - the "Unlock Bootloader" screen never pops up on the EVO screen. A web search reveals that this is a common problem; unlock doesn't work on 2.17.651.5 (which is what I have) and one needs to be on ROM version 2.08.651.2. The problem is that I can't downgrade. Online one can find both the PG86IMG.zip file and the .exe ROM Update Utility for 2.08.651.2, but neither will take, I just get messages that it won't over-write a newer ROM version.

Any ideas on how to downgrade to 2.08.651.2? It seems that unless I can, I can't unlock the bootloader... at least until HTC fixes their unlocker.

(By the way, the old EVO with the broken touchscreen (the buttons still work, so I can access recovery, bootloader, etc.) has the identical bootloader version and date as the new EVO but it has ROM version 2.08.651.2 and I can unlock it via the HTC method with no problems. So I presume that if I could in fact downgrade the ROM on the new phone, I could unlock it too.)

Thanks... Scott's site is a great source for all kinds of stuff, but the problem is reverting to an older ROM when you have the stock hboot 1.5 - it won't let you do that.

Success! I found that not all versions of 2.17.651.5 are created equal.

By writing this RUU .exe update over the existing ROM (same 2.17.651.5 version number) I could unlock the bootloader with no problem.
hey, I'm foreign to RUU (mostly work on motorola and samsungs). what steps did you take to apply this? trying to downgrade by buddy's 3d. thanks

Can you help me with how to do this? I'm having every exact problem you are having, the only difference is I that I'm using a Mac.

I use a Mac also. You have to run this on Parallels (which is what I use) or some other Windows emulator. Or just borrow someone's Windows PC. It was actually pretty simple, you just download and run the .exe file and it tells you exactly what to do.

I have hboot v1.50 and software version 2.17 and this unlock method worked perfectly fine. sucks that i have to use fastboot to flash roms, but hey I get free wifi just like my og 4g I have as back up.

I had the same problem n had to find a PG86IMG.zip file to run in bootloader then I did my other E3D using a RUU.exe file to put it to another stock version in order to root.

Try using Flash Image GUI u can find it in the market 99cents or get the link from a xda site free. I have a video on utube u can use to c how its done with no pc needed. Here is the link: http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=%2F&gl=US#/watch?v=XyCqqvYKnaY

This was posted by bobodobo. Yes it works, but it only unlocks the bootloader temporarily with the htcdev method. NOTE: you don't gain S-OFF but you can flash kernels/ROMs
As of yet no one has been able to fully root the HTC evo 3d on software number 2.17.651.5 with hboot 1.50 running 2.3.4

I've got PCs at my disposal now, but how do I plug in my phone? It's obviously connected through a USB cable on both ends, but what setting do I have to set my phone to? I have it on just charging now, but the RUU fails to recognize any device through USB.

As I recall you have to set it to "disk drive" mode and have "USB debugging" enabled (from the home screen: Menu button / Settings / Applications / Development / check "USB debugging").
