Ok I was trying to unlock the bootloader on my replacement EVO 3D with hboot 1.5 using the htcdev.com method. When I try to unlock I get stuck after step 12 in the instructions - the "Unlock Bootloader" screen never pops up on the EVO screen. A web search reveals that this is a common problem; unlock doesn't work on 2.17.651.5 (which is what I have) and one needs to be on ROM version 2.08.651.2. The problem is that I can't downgrade. Online one can find both the PG86IMG.zip file and the .exe ROM Update Utility for 2.08.651.2, but neither will take, I just get messages that it won't over-write a newer ROM version.
Any ideas on how to downgrade to 2.08.651.2? It seems that unless I can, I can't unlock the bootloader... at least until HTC fixes their unlocker.
(By the way, the old EVO with the broken touchscreen (the buttons still work, so I can access recovery, bootloader, etc.) has the identical bootloader version and date as the new EVO but it has ROM version 2.08.651.2 and I can unlock it via the HTC method with no problems. So I presume that if I could in fact downgrade the ROM on the new phone, I could unlock it too.)
