Downside of carrier vs unlocked from google

Okay, I'm really happy for the successful tmo users. Actually, I wish I could use it here, but all my google searches show that VZ really is the best in Phoenix. Do you know if there's any trial period where I could try tmo, but more importantly, seamlessly go back to VZ if it doesn't work well for me.

There is one and you don't have to switch to try.

I could have got it for free as well from T-Mobile (with Pixel 5 trade in), but I couldn’t do it. I hate the carriers and never buy carrier version, even though with Pixel and iPhone it’s not that big of a deal. Went as usual with Google store unlocked, now if only damn Google can ship my phone please
Yeah I hear you. I don't usually buy the carrier versions either however, this time I thought, what the he**. It's not my primary device so whatever and I'm not paying for it so...

"OnePlus" is just a household name at this point. I doubt it will ever have the same level of clout again. IMO the best and maybe last oneplus device to come from was the 7t

Oneplus once gave us flagship calibur phones for half the price. Once they went all "high on the hog" with $1000 phones. As you say, they've become just another Samsung , Google and Apple.

yeah but the issue is that they don't even compete anymore at the price league of those like Samsung and Apple specifically. The only way they did compete was bringing almost a par level experience for cheaper. Now they bring almost sub par experience over the others in my opinion and for the same price which was their only saving factor up until after the oneplus 7. I own still a OnePlus 7 pro. Bought it for under 200 and to me that is a screaming deal for what it is and does. So...with that said what a Pixel 6 has going for it being around 600 or cheaper in some cases it flatout an amazing deal for what it is does and will be capable of.

Understandable, mine is not primary phone as well but I still hate the carriers and their buying from them too much. I don't like dealing with them other than cell service. But that's a me problem

Also, this is the first time i recall I don't have Pixel on launch day in my hand. Way to screw me up Google

I got an email this morning telling me there is a delay...

I stopped buying phones from carriers a long time ago, and I go no where near their "deals".

Bloatware, sneaky salesmanship, "overlooked" conditions, steering toward higher-priced and higher-markup phones, and so on, and just good old fashion preying on the ignorant.

Perhaps if you can't afford a phone any other way, then maybe you need to rethink

Anyone whose "advice" is commission-driven and activation-driven should be avoided.

Buy from a manufacturer or a vendor, not a carrier.

(just my opinion)

Google is both a carrier and an oem... Apple too... Well not completely. Guess you just have to know what you want what you are getting and why. But I agree. Last time we financed a car was in 2007, and that right there is for a very good reason. Maybe we just need more self control? Or is it just human nature?

Sometimes you do what you need... Other times you do what you want and that right there sums it up

Funny how a lot of people are downing the base storage of 128gb when that was the max storage of the pixel 4 series lol. Adjustments can be made and as the OP stated the free trade-in promo is too hard to pass up especially when not used as a main phone. I choose to be appreciative in the situation instead of focusing on what's missing .

I've had my Galaxy Note 8 for 4 years and I'm at 57.9GB out of 64GB. I've got 10GB of music on an SD card in the expandable slot. If that's all I've hit after 4 years, I'm not too worried. I know files get larger as time goes on so I might be kissing 128GB some day, but by then I'm pretty sure I'll be upgrading once again or I'll just have to rely more on the cloud.

Exactly they're slowly becoming LG without the price discounts. LG use to release good phones but after about 3 months the phones msrp would be slashed in half permanently. OnePlus isn't doing that but should considering that they're now at a price point in where they don't have any leading features except for extremely fast charging which isn't at the top of my priority list.

Nothing absolutely nothing is wrong with financing a phone through a carrier and it is no way the same as financing a car. 1st off phones are always at 0% apr and if you are not tied to credits it can be paid off at anytime. Second in phone sales the reps usually don't get paid for selling you a phone they get paid for the service. We're phone geeks so yes it makes sense sometimes for us to finance from the manufacturer, but you're also failing to realize the benefits of going carrier. Not everyone has multiple phones to use should their device start to mess up. If you purchase a phone from a carrier they handle the warranty for you unlike a phone not purchased from the carrier where you have to send your phone off and wait a week+ to get it back and sometimes may have to pay a fee if they deem damage. Won't keep talking about why carrier purchases make sense for some people, but you can see the point. Buying from carrier does not mean you can't afford a device especially when those buying from the manufacturer are using a credit institution which is worse as it actually reports to your credit and can raise your credit utilization(heavy into finance and credit reporting). At the end of the day we have choices that we're able to choose based on what we feel is best for the situation.

I love my LGs... Best phones I've ever owned imo. But I'm partial to the quad DAC and the MIL-STD rating of them and for the price nowadays for one used you Can't beat that.. They were a niche of a brand because of this and could not stay afloat. Oneplus ramped up slowly and as you see their shift and watch it unfold you will understand why they changed... LG can afford to cut it loose and keep going

As far as we can tell there are two models GLUOG, G8VOU
Both offer sub6 band support. You would have to be more specific on what you are trying to answer.

I heard some people say all 6pros are mmWave, and others say differently. I know that the unlocked 6 is sub6, and was wondering if the same is true concerning the pro. The model number gives the answer. Thank you.

I have always bought my phones through Verizon, my carrier. I ordered my Pro on launch day and got it yesterday, the 28th, just as promised. Many who ordered from Google didn't. I think buying from Google is fine too, except if you are on Verizon and order the 6, not the pro, you won't have access to the "real" 5G band. I know that is only available in a few areas now, but it is growing by the day. I keep mine 2 or 3 years and would be frustrated if I spent that much money and couldn't get the faster 5G when available.

Technically speaking what locks down a device from having certain capabilities when it comes to cellular technology are two things. The hardware and sw provisioning. SoC design is enabled this way based on its architecture. Just like a PCB is built as a template, then you add components and join those components with traces to allow it to work how it should same for a SoC design. The chip or CPU and antenna will be built optimally for what they aim for and the SoC can be built to accommodate. Typically this was done for regions of the world. If you sell a device in two different markets Euro and US, then you can build two different devices HW-wise because Europe and US do not or did not operate on identical network spectrums. So it makes sense economically sometimes. Or you can make two identical hw and limit all via sw provisioning and this is typically done with a set or subset of mbn files. Those mbns carry all the carrier tweaks etc to provision a phone as soon as you insert an active sim card in the system. It goes and utilizes that mbn or other hex/binary file to provision the phone the needed sw to operate fully with whatever sim/carrier you activated. I honestly have no idea how Google had these built or what sw they run in the nuts bolts area but it seems like it is a mixture of the two...only time will tell I suppose. Won't be long before someone dissects the OS and HW soon.
