Welcome to the forums.
I think if you just type away and back out of Messaging, it will save it as a draft. At least it used to be this way. Been almost a year since I ran a stock S3.

I use an app like color note. That way I can use a full screen box to work with and not worry about connection issues or an auto page refresh in a browser to screw you up.

Ever have a nice long post written up, leave the browser for something, then come back only to have it automatically refresh the page and loose everything you just wrote? Yeah, that sucks big time.
