drastic overnight change in battery life

hey guys, i know there are tons of battery related posts but i'm not sure that one has addressed this specific issue.

basically, until a few days ago, my battery would last me just about 12 hours with moderate use. i was pretty satisfied with it.

yesterday and today, however, my battery has gone to red before lunchtime... just under 5 hours of use. what's the deal?

is it possible that some new application is completely zapping my phone juice? i've been using advanced task killer to keep tabs on this, so i would think not.

any suggestions? as far as i know, i haven't changed any settings or varied my regular use with the phone.

thanks for any solutions or tips!

Make sure Maps and/or navigation are not on or running in the background.
If you have a task killer, kill em.

Check your up/awake times and see what they are. Chances are there's something running in the background that shouldn't be.

thanks for the tips. i never leave map/navigation on so i don't think that's the root of the problem. does the calendar really take up much battery? (i've turned it off for now so i suppose we'll see).

finally:

Check your up/awake times and see what they are. Chances are there's something running in the background that shouldn't be.

i briefly looked around and couldn't find any menu or option for up/awake times. where should i look, slinky?

it looks like you guys are all suggesting controlling my active apps. i appreciate the tips, but this doesn't seem like the problem to me. my app usage has not changed since the days i was getting what i considered normal battery times. frightfully, it feels like my batter just crapped out.

would anyone recommend some sort of voodoo battery reset/ drain-recharge technique? i've seen people talking about the bump charge, but i'm not worried about a sudden drop in battery right after unplugging (as far as i recall i have not experienced this particular problem).

should i just suck it up and buy a bigger battery?

thanks again :D

You may not leave the map on, but it may be running in the background.
Get a task killer/monitor and check.

to find up and awake times go to settings, about, battery

it will show your up and awake time, generally speaking the two numbers should not be the same. if they are, some application (usually) is not letting your phone go to sleep, and thus draining the battery quicker.

i know you're keeping track of your running apps with a task killer, but have you tried uninstalling any new app to see if it helps?

I had a similiar problem. I used to get 14 hours easy out of my battery, and now with the same usage 8 hours. I have installed ATK and have a few things that it's killing, but nothing big. No GPS, WiFi, or anything crazy like that. Weird.

Once I left on Google Latitude to track my wife and it drained the battery very fast. You might want to try System Panel instead of using advanced task killer it will give you a true list of apps running.

:D

Go Menu>Settings>About Phone>Battery This will give you all the information you really need. Level, Battery Use and the Up Time and Awake Time. The ratio between Up and Awake after several hours should be no worse than 5:1 depending upon how much use.

thanks for the tip adiliyo, but the numbers are different. good to know that's where that is though. i just got done looking through my list of downloaded apps and i didn't see any that weren't there a week or so ago. again, it was a solid tip and thanks for suggesting it.

mclarryjr: just got done doing your suggestion too. my running services right now are limited to: calendar (obexservice), touch input, sync service, and messages. i guess i'll just have to see what happens. it would suck to have to go through and check all of these things regularly.

Well lets hope everything is fine now :)

I just checked my app's that are running and calendar is not listed you might want to keep and eye on that I heard that being a battery problem.
