DROID 2.1 Update thread.

I thought about doing that but it seems a little difficult and i don't want to mess up my phone.

It is a process that will take you minutes. I did it while sitting in the car for a friend today while we drove to the mall. Phil made a sweet how to video for it and everything.

Step 1 - Download Astro File Manager from the MarketPlace
Step 2 - Download the Update file from the www.androidcentral.com homepage (do that on your Droid)
Step 3 - Open Astro, accept the terms, navigate to the download folder.
Step 4 - find the file name you just downloaded, press and hold it then click rename, name it update.zip
Step 5 - Press and hold, press edit, then move, then up at the top, click on the "up" so you go "back" a level and thats the root of your SD/
Step 6 - Press and hold, then edit, then paste. File of update.zip should now appear here.
Step 7 - Power off phone, and slide open keyboard
Step 8 - Press and HOLD X then press the power button (when device powers on, let go of power button and CONTINUE to hold X
Step 9 - When you see the /!\ you let go of X, then press the volume up and then RIGHT after, press the camera button, will then bring up another menu.
Step 10 - Use the D pad to navigate to apply update.zip from SD (2nd option) and click on it,
Step 11 - Sit back and watch 2.1 install on your Droid, and then have fun with it!

I got my update on Saturday morning. Since then, I have noticed a few things:

Battery is draining much faster. I played around with live wall papers but then I just put a stock regular one up. The battery seems like it is being sucked dry. I know that it is nothing I am doing because I have barely even touched the phone these last 2 days.

The second thing is that the phone is running really hot. It would normally get hot if I was on the internet, but now it gets hot faster, and stays hotter longer than before the update.
I can't find Google Earth in the Market. Is there a special way to search for it?

I know that many of you have seen an increase in battery performance, so I cant figure out what is up.

I noticed at first the massive heat and battery loss. And it was because of one thing:

The program "World War"
I noticed it in the market after 2.1 hit (2.1 only?), so I gave it a whirl, I didn't even play it THAT much. But I noticed that just using the program (3-4 times a day) would use 34% of my battery! Thats more than the display or phone calls!
After I deleted it, it wasn't too hot or dead!

Honestly, I feel like the over clocking had a placebo affect on many of us. We thought it was SOOO Fast, but it wasnt really. I downgraded back to stock not long after using many different ROM's and I must say i always failed to see the difference. I love my Droid on 2.1

Those that didnt get the update, well, they manually did the update, its WELL worth it :)

I agree with this. Although sometimes I do notice a speed upgrade, I found my Cyanogenmod ran faster without overclocking than with it.

Although certain things were FAST with overclocking, I say it ran faster because:

1) Window transitions were faster
2) screen transitions were smoother
3) It unlocked faster
4) It booted faster
5) It was more stable (both after unlock and in general).

Therefore, everything was just smoother/nicer on my phone. Although specific apps were a little slower, the increase in speed during everyday use makes the phone faster.

I love live wallpapers, but yes, they are not worth it. I only use them in the days when I want my phone to look awesome (aka out for the night, etc), but I have to make sure my phone is fully charged before I do so. Mostly, I stick with a static background.

Stay away from google earth. It's huge, slow, and will eat battery. Yeah, it's cool, but its unlikely you will use it more than once.

Either .sbf it, or (what I would do) is go return it to Verizon, and tell them what happened.

I say this, because as you have already "accepted" the 2.1 upgrade, it will not come to you again. Yes, you can manually upgrade, but who knows what code or anything was screwed up in the phone with this botched OTA upgrade.

Yes, I know, the sbf should wipe it, but as you are not rooted, and this was verizons fault, I would just get a new phone.

For 2.1? I am personally not sure if it is the same way. I think you need to apply the sbf to go back to 2.0.1, and root using the resources that can be found in the root/hacks section of android central.

does the update only come at night? I switched back to my tour to get the update for it now i switched back to my droid to get its update. My droid has been turned off for about a week so I am hoping it comes tonight. I checked for updates but the phone told me i was running the most current program.

ya, i agree, bring er back and see what they say. but i would try the factory reset first, never hurts, and thats what i did. and mine is sweet sailing.

I got mine over night last night but my wife hasn't gotten hers. Just using basic math and assuming that there about just over 1.5+ million Droids out there with 200K getting updated nightly we have just about a week before every single Droid sees the update.

I just got 2.1 OTA at 5 AM Eastern today! Glad I work overnight so I was here when it came down. Update had no problems and I'm loving it so far. Loving the live wallpapers, news & weather widget, and the new gallery is sweet!

The only odd thing is the weather widget shows a sun next to the temp but the sun isn't up yet? Or is that telling me the forecast for today is sunny? That would explain it.

I have noticed going through the phone's settings/menu is definitely smoother!

Yesterday for the first time my Droid (with 2.0.1) sent a call straight to VM.

I just got 2.1 OTA a little bit ago so we'll see if it ever happens again. That was the first time also it ever happened since I got the phone and have been with VZW.

It used to always happen on Sprint.

I have read that you won't get the update if you are rooted, but I found that it will show in system updates even if you are rooted. It showed up on mine this morning.
